Gestalt in Woolloomooloo

GLOO is a group of Gestalt therapists who work with clients to help them in their recovery from addictions.

Many of the group are 3rd and 4th Year Gestalt Psychotherapy Students who donate their time in order to gain experience as therapists.

Along with their Gestalt training, many of the GLOO therapists have previous experience in the field. All GLOO therapists have received training in Addictions and the 12-Step Model. 

GLOO is also supported by a number of experienced therapists who offer a limited number of free and low cost places to clients in the groups and workshops they run.

What is Gestalt?

Patterns 

It's not easy to translate the German word "Gestalt" -  it's about looking for the shape, the pattern, the whole that is greater than the sum of the parts. Its about nurturing healing impulses, letting them breathe, finding the "pay dirt" that can bring about change. 

Removing Blocks 

Some people think of it the other way around - as removing the blocks that prevent us from accessing our inherently natural, simple and healthy ways of experiencing and being in the world.

Aliveness and Excitement 

Gestalt is interested in aliveness and excitement - the energy we have and can use to change our habitual ways of experiencing and of being.

Here and Now 

In Gestalt we talk of the "here and now". We  want to know what we're doing with ourselves in this moment - how we're contacting others and how we can have real dialogue with them.

Unfinished business 

Gestalt Psychotherapy helps people finish their “unfinished business” from the past. Our past is present in the way we live today and if we become aware of our actions, thoughts and feelings and accept them, change occurs. 

The Relational Approach

Our approach is that each person is a unique individual with the potential for growth and mature self-expression. 

When that person comes as a client to GLOO our desire is to truly meet them in a non-judgemental and completely non-shaming way. True meeting includes a sharing of the experiences common to us all.
