Who can play? Any Southern California resident. No previous rugby experience required. Bring a good attitude and we can teach you the rest.
Where do we practice? At Heroes Park in Lake Forest on the corner of Jeronimo and Los Alisos. Practices run from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You can also run with our “old boys” on Wednesday nights at the same time and location.
When are games? We will usually enter at least one fall tournament (to be determined) to get warmed up for the season. League play begins in January. You can expect to have a game every Saturday (with two bye weeks) from January through April. Half are at home, and half are away. Games usually begin at 1:00 PM.
What are the expectations? You are expected to show up for practice ready to learn the drills and techniques that will make us a fit, successful team. Missing practices means you will be less fit and probably get less game time. For home games, you are expected to come early and help set up the field. You are expected to pay your club dues and chip in for home game after-parties.
What are the costs? Dues are $200 for the season, plus $20 per home game for the after-party events. You are welcome to pay in installments. If you get a sponsor for our club (can be a local business, a supportive family member, or a friend) then you will receive a 2-for-1 waiver of your dues. For example: if your rich uncle chips in $300 to the club, then he will get a nice tax break and you will have $150 of your dues waived—meaning you only have to pay another $50. If you bring in $400 of donations, your dues are completely waived. We have forms for businesses and family members/friends to help you get donations. Talk to Bryce for more info.
What equipment is required? You need a good pair of cleats that have no toe cleat in the front-and-center of the shoe (American football cleats usually have one, but if you can remove it then you’re ok). For practice you can wear regular running clothes, but you will want to purchase at least one pair of rugby shorts and a jersey (they are more durable). If enough people are interested, we can put together a group order to get a discount.
