NOTE: Make sure you know your gatewayhigh.net username and password before you get started!
Part 1: Sign up for a Moodle account (unless you already have one). - Go to http://wiki.gatewayhigh.org/moodle .
- On the right-hand side, click on "Create new account".
- Enter your gatewayhigh.net username and password.
- When it asks you for your email address, use your gatewayhigh.net email address.
- Fill in the other information and click on "Create my new account".
- Next, sign into your gatewayhigh.net email account.
- You should have received an email asking you to confirm your Moodle account. IF NOT, YOU DID SOMETHING WRONG. GO BACK TO STEP 1!
- Click on the link in the email you got.
- It should say "thank you". Click on "Continue".
- Login to Moodle using your username and password to make sure it worked.
- Then...
Part 2: Enrol in Algebra I on Moodle. - (Make sure you are logged into Moodle.)
- (You might have to click on the word "Courses" or on "GHS" in the top left of the screen.)
- Choose "Algebra I".
- Enter the Enrolment Key.
- Click on "Enrol me in this course".
- You should see the regular web site for this class. Make sure it says your name in the upper right hand corner (not "guest").
- Now...
Part 3: Sign up for a ClassZone account. - On the Algebra I web site, click on "ClassZone (online textbook)".
- Click on the "Online Textbook" button on the right-hand side of the page.
- Choose "Student Login".
- On the right-hand side, click on "Create Account".
- Fill in the information requested.
- Ms. Krishnan will write the ISBN number on the whiteboard.
- For username, use your gatewayhigh.net username (NOT the whole email address -- this way you won't forget it for later.
- For password, use your gatewayhigh.net password -- this way if you forget it for later, I can provide it for you.
- Click "Submit". An image of the textbook should pop up in front.
- In the box on top right, where it says "PAGE I", enter the "16". Make sure it takes you to section 1.3, Order of Operations.
- Success! Next step...
Part 4: Subscribe to the course calendar. You need 2 windows, or 2 tabs, for this. In one window: - You should still be on the Honors Algebra II web page. On the right-hand side under "Upcoming events", click on "Go to Calendar".
- Scroll down and click on "Export Calendar".
- Make sure "All events" and "Recent and next 60 days" are selected.
- Click on "Get Calendar URL".
- You should see a long URL appear near the bottom of the page. (It starts with http://wiki...)
- Now LEAVE THIS WINDOW ON THIS PAGE and open a new window or tab (command-T).
In the new window: - Sign into your gatewayhigh.net account (your regular email) if you haven't already.
- In the top left corner, click on "Calendar".
- On the bottom of the left-hand side, under "Other Calendars", click on "Add" and then choose "Add by URL".
- Copy and paste the long URL (web address) from the other window -- and then click "Add".
- Click on "Back to Calendar". If you are in the weekly view, you should see the upcoming Quiz on Thursday/Friday. You can also use the monthly view.
- If it doesn't seem to have worked, reload the page and/or sign out of calendar and sign in again.
- Now for some Algebra content...
Part 5: Do the Order of Ops Concept Check. - First, if you're not familiar with Order of Ops (PEMDAS), please review it in the online textbook or on purplemath.com.
- Go back to the Algebra I page.
- Under "1: Prealgebra Skills", you should see a link that says "Order of Ops (PEMDAS) Concept Check". Click on that, and then click the button to start the quiz.
- There are lots of "Submit" buttons. I recommend submitting each question individually -- it will give you a second chance if you got it wrong. (They will give you a very small point penalty for incorrect responses.)
- If you get some wrong, read the feedback that they give and then try again.
- When you have gotten them all right, at the bottom, click on "Submit all and Finish".
- It will give you a summary, including a score out of 4. When you are done reading the summary, click on "Finish Review".
- THIS GRADE WILL GO INTO MY GRADEBOOK! If you would like to get a higher score, you can click on "Re-attempt Quiz".
Once you've gotten this far, you can take a break and help the people around you get caught up. Or you can move on to any or all of the following... Part 6: Edit your Moodle profile. - Get back to the class website (Moodle).
- Click on your name in the top right-hand corner.
- What you're looking at is your current profile (with the silly yellow smiley).
- Click on "Edit Profile". (Top Center)
- DO NOT change the first few fields (name, etc.).
- You can fill in the big box with any info you feel comfortable sharing with the whole class, as long as it is school appropriate. Notice that you can include links, smileys, etc. Remember that all the students in Algebra I will be able to see your profile.
- You can also fill in your interests (hobbies, musical artists that you like, etc.).
- You can put in a photo (or other school-appropriate image) for your profile.
- Click on "Update Profile".
- Now you should see your new profile.
- You can click on any of your interests to see who else listed those (just like facebook).
Part 7: Send someone a Moodle message. - Click on "GHS" in the top left.
- Click on "Algebra I".
- On the left side, under "People", click on "Participants".
- Choose someone to send a message to. (It can be someone whom you don't know yet.)
- Click on "Send Message" and send them a school-appropriate message.
Part 8: Start the HW assignment.
- Get back to the online textbook.
- Read Section 1.3 (starting on page 16).
- Complete problems 14-42 evens ON A SHEET OF PAPER.
- Enter the solutions online (the link is [or will be] on the Algebra I page).
