FLUVANNA BOY’S SOCCER TEAM ::: POLICY AND PROCEDURES ::: Spring 2009 In order for this team to achieve our goals we need to be focused, driven and committed. Mediocrity will no longer be acceptable. We must demand more of ourselves on and off the playing field. "Winners make a commitment, losers make a promise," this statement will become the standard for our team in the future. It is easy to say I want to improve and help the team achieve its goals; but ultimately, it's your actions not words that will demonstrate your commitment to this team. Like in life, there are no guarantees! It is important to understand that everyone will have a role to play on this team. Accepting this responsibility depends on you. No matter the situation you find yourself in, you are a valuable member of the team and our success is directly tied to your positive contribution on and off the playing field. In order to clearly define what our expectations are of you as a member of this team, we have outlined our philosophy, policy and procedures. The following policies are not negotiable; if broken, there will be consequences. Read the information carefully. If you have questions or need clarification, please address them as soon as possible. Remember that ignorance will not be an excuse. We want everyone on the same page and hope this will help you focus on our goals. ___________________________________________________________ 1. Academics A. Remember, you are a student first and a soccer player second. B. A player must pass 3 full-time subjects the semester prior to participation to be eligible. C. Students must be in class and on time every day. v If an athlete needs assistance in any class, please see a coach for help or to make arrangements to get the necessary help. 2. General Conduct A. Players must understand that being a member of the FCHS Boy’s Soccer team is a privilege, not a right. B. They will conduct themselves in a manner that positively represents the team and FCHS on and off the field. C. Players should at all times respect each other, the coaches, officials, parents and their opponents. D. It is important you take care of yourself both physically and mentally. This means getting enough sleep, eating a well-balanced meal and addressing problems and concerns affecting your well being. E. Players at all times should focus on preparing themselves mentally and physically to play games and /or practices. They should not be concerned with other team members, as it relates to playing time. As stated before, you should always respect, support and encourage your teammates. F. Alcohol, drugs, and tobacco are strictly prohibited from any player on this team. Any player caught using any of these products on school property will be dismissed from the team. 3. Practice/Games A. Players should be on time for all team functions. It is vital that we maximize our time together as a team; therefore, players are to be on time and present at every practice. You are making a commitment to this team and to your self. If you are sick or a family emergency arises, you must call a coach ASAP or you will have an unexcused absence. Practice will run from approx. 3:45 to no later than 6:00. Players are to be ready to go and starting our warm-up at 3:45. If a player is going to be late, they need to come to a coach and tell them personally. If not a punishment will occur. I do not want to be told by another player. If they are receiving help from a teacher that is fine. Practice will start promptly at 3:45 P.M. B. If you are injured, you are to work out with the trainer and then attend practice. If you are sick, go home! If you are sick, the player needs to let someone on the coaching staff know personally. We ask that players take on personal responsibility when faced with a situation in which they miss valuable practice time. C. You are responsible for all the equipment issued to you, whether it is uniforms, bags, etc…. D. Absences are covered on the attendance policy. E. If a player receives in school suspension, that player may not participate in any team activities from the time the suspension is issued until after the time is served. In addition, the player may also face additional discipline at the coach’s discretion. 4. Team Travel A. You must travel with the team to away games on the bus and return on the bus, unless prior permission has been granted by FCHS administration. B. All players must ride the bus to and from the game. When playing at home, players will stay for both JV and Varsity games. At home games JV players will be allowed to leave at half time with coaches’ permission. No one will leave early, unless it is an emergency situation. All players know well in advance when homework is due and tests are going to be given. The same goes with projects. It is the player’s responsibility to have these things taken care of in advance. An emergency is a death in the family or something to that affect. C. Keep the travel bus clean. D. Conduct on the bus adheres to FCHS bus policy. E. While attending team functions on the road, be respectful and courteous to others at all times. Remember, you are representing FCHS and the Boy’s soccer team. F. Place travel bags in an orderly manner during games. 5. Discipline Listed below are the possible consequences for breaking any of the team rules discussed throughout this document. Obviously, we do not want to be put in a situation where we are forced to implement a disciplinary action. It is incumbent on you as a member of this team to abide by the rules set forth. It is the discretion of the coaching staff as to what disciplinary action will be taken if a rule is broken. A. Two mile run B. Not start a game C. Not dress for a game D. Not travel to an away game or playoff game E. Suspension for 1 or more games F. Suspension from the team (time period to be decided by coaching staff) G. Expulsion from the team The level of disciplinary action will depend on the severity of the rule broken and whether this is the first offense or a recurring behavior pattern that is detrimental to the team. Ultimately, the decision will be made by the coaching staff and/or the administration of FCHS on an individual basis. v Any policy not covered in this document will fall under the guidelines of the FCHS student and athletic handbooks. 2009 Fluvanna County High School Boys’ Soccer Attendance Policy Attendance at practice is a must for a winning program and the coaching staff is dedicated to creating an atmosphere in which our student-athletes demonstrate a willingness to work hard, play fair, and be champions. In the past, the boys’ soccer program has had trouble with attendance and consequently our performance on the field has suffered. Therefore, the coaching staff has put together a policy which we hope is fair and feasible in order to solve this problem. The policy will be administered with the utmost integrity and always with an eye on doing what is right for both the program and the individual student-athlete. TRAINING CAMP: Starting on the first practice after tryouts are concluded, players will be allowed to have one (1) excused absence without consequence before our first game which is schedule for Wednesday, March 11, 2009. Thereafter, subsequent absences will result in the player not being eligible to start in the March 11th game. We will not assign specific limits on how long a player must sit. The coaches will handle that on a case by case basis. In addition, while players are allowed one excused absence, there is a “no tolerance policy” for unexcused absences. DURING THE REGULAR SEASON: If a player is absent from the practice the day before a game, whether excused or unexcused, that player will be ineligible to start the following day. For example, if the team has a game on Monday and the player misses practice on the Friday before the game, he will not start the game. Once again, the amount of time the player is held out will be at the discretion of the coaching staff. THE FOLLOWING CONSITUTES AN EXCUSED ABSENCE: An excused absence is defined in the F.C.H.S. student handbook. Family, religious, medical, and/or school related absences must be verified by the coaches. A doctor’s note and/or parent contact in the form of a written letter or verbal exchange must be received in order to confirm an excused absence from practice. UNEXCUSED ABSENCES: Unexcused absences will not be tolerated and will result in a player being ineligible to start the next game after the absence has occurred, whenever it occurs, be it the day before a game or at any other previous time. If a student attends school during the day, it is expected that he will be at practice in the afternoon. “I don’t feel like coming to practice” does not constitute a legitimate excuse. In addition, unexcused absences will include any absence due to either in-school suspension or out-of-school suspension. Unexcused absences may result in much longer time on the bench and/or dismissal from the team. In closing, the coaching staff would like to express our desire that the above attendance policy will promote a disciplined and responsible attitude amongst our student-athletes. Playing sports at the high school level takes a great deal of commitment and desire and we want our players to understand that we expect nothing less then their best. The policy is not intended to punish, but to instill a sense of pride and integrity to our program that will benefit both the community and the team. Thank you. |
