Welcome to First UMC

Worship may be your first introduction to the hospitality and vitality offered in Jesus’ name. The sanctuary combines modern architecture, Tiffany stained glass windows from the old downtown church, and an inviting space that allows your eye to be drawn to the cross. Your spirit will be engaged by the Spirit.

The “Praise Service” at 9:00 a.m. each Sunday is lead by gifted musicians. The congregation finds the visuals for music and message to focus their attention on the worship of God. The children hear a message for “young disciples”. The word of God is read and preached so that each life is nurtured and challenged to be a more faithful disciple all week long.
The “Traditional Service” at 11:00 a.m. offers the high quality of formal liturgy that has formed and nurtured Christians throughout the ages. The hymns, the prayers, the Word read and preached, and equip worshippers to be sent forth to serve in Jesus’ name.

Often heard, “You did not come to church today. You came to worship. YOU are the CHURCH. In the name of Jesus, go to love and to serve in Jesus’ name! The grace and peace of God goes with us.”

Childcare by trained staff is available. A quiet infant cry room is available. A safe toddler room is always staffed. Between worship services at 10:00 a.m., educational and spiritual growth opportunities are available for all ages.

 A Word From the Pastor:

First UMC continues to be formed by the Spirit of God. Since being appointed as pastor on July 1, 2006, I have marveled at the willingness of people to express love and hospitality, to seek to grow through small group studies, to embrace outreach through mission trips to the Gulf Coast and by serving the needs in New Castle. I have seen worship energize and comfort. I have been privileged to read the Word and preach messages that God has inspired. I have watched youth of the community find a safe place to share their struggles. I have seen children offered education through the computer welcome center, Sunday School classes, and be accepted with hugs and smiles. I have seen a community recommit to sacrificial support and still offer their time and talents. Tears of sadness and laughter have been shared as people let down their masks and experience the unconditional love of God from each other. At First UMC we affirm that God meets people where they are.
