During the summer, children can lose some of their reading and writing skills from lack of use. We have compiled a list of resources to allow children to explore and use their literacy skills this summer. It is important for children to find the joy in reading and writing to help promote reading for enjoyment. Remember, reading and writing are important skills that develop, like sports and music, through practice.
These websites were explored during the school presentation and are a few selected resources for the summer:
Frederick County Public Library · Click on e-books for kids for online stories free for families · Summer Reading Program http://www.fcpl.org/information/programs/2009/src.html · Summer Reading Program sign up http://host.evanced.info/fcpl/sr/homepage.asp
· 6 week summer program · Personalized letters arrive by email 4 times weekly and tell the continuing story of the Pet Shop Pals · Use Classroom ID Number 411142 for Carroll Manor · Online activities follow each letter and let the school know you have read the letter.
· Online humorous poetry for kids, some read aloud · Tools for writing poetry as well
· Children can design their own comic strips online or in print involving lots of writing · Story ideas are included for students as a resource
