BMCCHS Candidate Bios

For Board of Directors 2009-10

All candidate bios are supplied exactly as provided by the candidates.

Samuel Vincent Adams – Parent – Currently serving on BMC board

I am Vince Adams and am a current board member for BMCCHS.  I also had the pleasure of serving on the initial BMCCHS Advisory Board, prior to the opening of our school, during the formation of the school charter and bylaws.  I have lived in Simpsonville for the past 10 years and am employed as a stockbroker.  I am a volunteer through several community organization (Little League football coach, Fountain Inn Recreation League; Youth Mentor, Long Branch Baptist Church Mentor, Greenville Fatherhood Coalition).

I am married to Stacey Adams (volunteers as assistant basketball coach, BMCCHS Lady Bengals), and have 3 children who attend Greenville County public schools (Kenya, age 9; Jawanza, age 14, and Numbia, who is a rising 11th grader at BMCCHS).

My desire to serve on the board of BMCCHS stems from my initial desire as a parent to see our great school be recognized as one of the premier charter high schools in South Carolina.  With the outstanding staff that Principal Sinclair has assembled, as well as the tremendous commitment from our awesome students, parents and board members, I simply wish to continue to offer my time, dedication and resources to ensure that BMCCHS continues to be a shining beacon of academic excellence.

Bobbi Burns – Currently serving on BMC Board

Bobbi Burns is a retired educator, having spent 30 years in The School District of Greenville County as a classroom teacher at Hillcrest High School, a counselor at Hillcrest High School, Director of Guidance at Mauldin High School, and Assistant Principal at Greenville High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree at Winthrop College and her master’s degree at Furman University. Following her retirement, she worked in an insurance office and as the administrative assistant for the President & CEO of a dot com company before coming to Greenville Tech as a part-time advisor in the General Business division. She is presently Director of Student Services and Counselor at the Brashier Campus in Simpsonville.  Bobbi is serving on the 2008 President’s Leadership Institute for Greenville Technical College.

Bobbi is a member of the Synod Council of the SC Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America; chairman of Synod Nominating Committee,; active member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Mauldin; choir member; hand bell choir member; former president of congregation; former church treasurer; former church council member; member of Greenville Woman’s Club; and grandmother of 3 – ages 9, 8 and 4.

Bobbi has been on the board for 3 years and would like to continue serving to see the completion of the BMCCHS building as well as to work with the faculty and staff as they graduate the first class from BMCCHS in 2010!

Don E. Holtzclaw – Parent

My wife, Kathy and I have two children, a son that graduated from Clemson in December of 2008: and a daughter who will be a Senior at BMCCHS this fall.  I am a life time resident of SC and attended Greenville County public schools from Brushy Creek Elementary to Eastside High School.  I attended and graduated from Greenville Technical College.  I am employed with Jacobs Engineering in Mauldin as a Process Piping Designer for the past 28 years.  Former Den Leader and Cub Master of Pack 159 in Simpsonville.  I taught Sunday School at our church for 10 years in the Pre-school department.  Former Board member of a now closed Greenville County charter school.  During my time served, I had to speak to Greenville county School Board members in person and at meetings.  I developed a good working relationship with the special education staff to help work through the many problems the school encountered.  I have seen the good side and unfortunately the bad side of the Charter School System.  I am a charter school supporter and I want BMCCHS to succeed.  I will to the best of my ability carry out the duties of the Board to keep BMCCHS in compliances with all rules and regulations and help BMCCHS to become a successful school for years to come.

I want to help BMCCHS to become the example of quality education in Greenville County, state of South Carolina, and the nation.  The goal of making a difference in the lives of students at our school.

Gary Hyman – Community

I am the CEO of the Orthopedic Research Foundation of the Carolinas and also work to help companies and organizations with strategic and operational effectiveness.  In addition, I serve as a board member for the SC Center for Economic Excellence in Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Sciences, Inc. and Full Dimension Ministries USA.  My wife Gerri and our three sons live in the Simpsonville area and are active members of Advent United Methodist Church.

I have a passion for children and their advancement.  I have worked with youth through athletic activities, church mission activities (annually) and as a school volunteer.  I have 20+ years of experience developing for-profit and non-profit organizations and I’m impressed with BMC’s accomplishments thus far.

As I have been helping with the preparations for the Spring Celebration, I have become keenly aware of the jewel that is Brashier Middle College.  I have enjoyed and look forward to being a part of this school, however I can.  And as my professional life entails extensive marketing, advertising and fundraising experience, I’d appreciate the opportunity to use this experience and enthusiasm to help further the school’s programs and successes.

Kevin Jones – Parent – Currently serving on BMC Board

I am married to my wife Joy for 21 years and have three children.  Abby, Emily & Peter.  Abby is completing her junior year at Brashier and Emily is completing her freshman year.  Peter is in 4th grade.  One of the things I enjoy the most is being husband to Joy and father to my three kids.  Professionally I am a banker.

I have had the privilege of serving on the board since the school started.  It has been very rewarding and I have come to appreciate and value the hard work of the board, administration and staff.  Together we have seen tremendous fruit for hard work.  I could not be more excited about BMCCHS

And the charter school movement.  We are just seeing the tip of the ice berg and as we continue to challenge the “status quo.”  I look forward to working together with fellow board members to continue to make our school one of the most sought after options in the community.

Brashier is an excellent learning environment for our children with an outstanding staff of teachers and administrators.  I would like to continue to be an integral part of supporting the team and furthering the great growth.  I have enjoyed working on the Board and would like to continue to be part of the very strong leadership team.  Being on the board is a way to help the education and development of not only my children, but all who will be the leaders of tomorrow.

This school is something to believe in.  It is pure and true.  The teachers and the staff work tirelessly to make sure every student achieves to their potential.  This is an opportunity to serve for something as good as this rare.  I am always proud and un-ashamed to say that I serve Brashier Middle College Charter High School.

Charles H. Morton, Ph.D – Community – GTC

I am currently the director of the GTC Brashier Campus.  This role will afford me the unique opportunity to be able to understand the relationship between the College and the Middle College.  I have been a member of USC groups in 3 high schools.  I have also served in various positions in higher education (both inside and outside the classroom).  I am an active member of a large Southern Baptist Church, serving in a variety of leadership roles. (Church council, teacher, chairman of the deacons, etc.)

I think this would be a great opportunity for me to use skills I have developed in 20+ years in education.  The prospect of maintaining the Middle College is central to the purpose of Greenville Tech and more directly the Brashier Campus.

Ginny Pazdan – Parent

I am a native of Greenville, married twenty-two years to Joe Pazdan, also a native.  Joe owns his own business, Pazdan-Smith Architects, and has been helping raise sponsorship funds for the Spring Celebration at Brashier.  Our children are Virginia, a rising sophomore at Furman University, Allie, a junior at Brashier; and Martin, an eighth grader at St. Joseph’s.

After graduating from Presbyterian College with a degree in Elementary Education, I taught in Greenville County for four years.  In 1991, I began teaching adult education night classes.  I decided to become a full-time mother in 1997.

I have been a member of the Junior League of Greenville for twenty-four years, and am currently serving on the Board of Visitors at Presbyterian College.

Since having a family, I have enjoyed volunteering at my children’s schools which include, St. Mary’s, Augusta Circle, Camperdown Academy, Greenville High, St. Joseph’s and Brashier.  I’ve participated at Brashier on the Spring Celebration Committee and would like to continue contributing to Brashier through service on the Brashier Board of Directors.  I think by being a parent of a student at Brashier, along with my educational background and my eagerness to serve, I can positively contribute to our school.

Brad Schneider – Parent-Currently serving on BMC Board.

I have been a Board member for one year.  I was asked to lead the fund raising committee for my first leadership role.  The result is the Spring Celebration that will be held May 15, 2009.  This event will set the ground work for our first fund raising event, position our volunteers to create an association that will support our school in the future and celebrate our students and educators successes.  I have been a commercial banker for 24 years of which 19 years have been in the Greenville market.  My financial back ground will continue to be used to support the board initiatives.  I am a Furman University graduate.  I am involved with Homeless Children International, the Appalachian Development Corporation, and Meals on Wheels.  My daughter Brenna is a rising Junior at Brashier. M y wife Beth has taught the Arts Intercession for the last two years.  I am a strong advocate of Brashier and the quality educations results that our school is achieving through the mastery learning process and the smaller classroom size.

I would like to continue to serve on our board to continue to assist in the direction of the school and capitalize on my past years experience.

George Singleton – Community/Business Leader

I am a resident of Simpsonville South Carolina; I serve as the Career Specialist for the College and Career Academy of Greenville Technical College at the Brashier Campus.  I am married to Renee, who is a business teacher at Mauldin Middle School.  We have three children, two boys and one girl.  Tristein, age 12, Joemai, age 8 and Imarie, age 3.  I have served on a number of boards in Greenville, County including Greenville Family Partnership, Simpsonville Rotary, Generation Group Homes, The Greenville Tech Advisory Board and Central Community Ministry and Upstate Circle of Friends.

Serving on the Board for Brashier this past year was a wonderful experience.  I really enjoyed working with the other Board members and would enjoy having the opportunity to work with many of them again for this upcoming year.  I feel collectively we make a lot of things happen in a very short period of time, but at the same time, we have so much work that needs to be done to meet the needs and objectives of BMC.  I think I could continue to be an asset to helping in whatever capacity that would be useful at any given time.

Mark Stewart – Currently serving on the BMC Board

Employer – Greenville Technical College – Coordinator, College and Career Academy. Prior to my current position, I was employed by Greenville Tech Charter HS for three years as an academic and career counselor. During my military career, I held various command-level positions, retiring as Superintendent of Family Support Operations for the Air Mobility Command. I hold a Bachelors Degree from Southern Illinois University and a Masters in Management from Southern Wesleyan University. My wife, Cynthia, and I have one son, Bradley, who graduated from GTCHS in 2006 and is currently a Junior at Wofford College.

I have served on the BMCCHS Board of Directors during the past two years as Treasurer/Finance Committee Chair, then Vice-Chair. With the help of dedicated staff, board members, parents, and (most importantly) students, we have been able to accomplish some great things. I’m anxious to see many of our diligent efforts come to fruition this coming academic year and beyond… I will continue to work accordingly.
