Course Materials The following books will be provided to each student: - ¡Exprésate! textbook - ¡Exprésate! vocabulary and grammar workbook - ¡Exprésate! activity workbook
It is not required but highly encouraged for students to bring their own personal Spanish-English translation dictionary (no electronic translators are allowed).
Course Descriptions Students will continue to improve reading, writing, and oral skills in the Spanish language. They will also be exposed to Latin-American and Spanish cultures. This includes, but is not limited to, food, art, customs and traditions.
Course Strategies This will be developed through the understanding and proper use of grammar and vocabulary. Students will learn about culture through projects, classroom discussions, and independent studying. The overall goal is to have students be able to carry on simple conversation confidently and correctly with each other and for students to have an appreciation for Latin-American and Spanish cultures. Organization and time management are essential towards being successful in this class.
Expectations of Students Students are expected to: - be in your seat with your textbook, workbooks, and notebook on your desk ready to begin class by the time the bell rings every day. - behave in an appropriate manner conducive to learning. This means that students will not sleep or be disruptive in class. - maintain an organized and legible notebook. - participate in class. - study OUTSIDE of the classroom in order to retain material. - come to me to receive missed notes and assignments if you were absent. - food and drinks are not allowed in the classroom with the only exception being clear water. - be in keeping with all guidelines on Academic Assistance as outlined on page 8 of the BMC student handbook. - Also, the use of electronic devices such as iPods, cell phones, and calculators will not be tolerated in the classroom.
Evaluations and Assignments - There will be four quizzes and one test per chapter. There are ten chapters in the textbook. - Once per quarter, a class project will replace a chapter test as a form of evaluation for any particular chapter and students will be notified ahead of time. - Notebooks will be inspected and graded for completion and neatness once at the end of each chapter for a quiz grade. - Any assignments that are turned in late without a valid excuse will be deducted 10 points per day late. Assignments are counted late if they are not turned in at the end of class when I ask for them.
Grading Scale Tests/Projects: 40% Quizzes: 30% Classwork: 15% Homework: 15% Cheating This applies to written work, oral, presentations, homework, quizzes, and tests. Examples of cheating include, but are not limited to the following: willful giving or receiving of an unauthorized text, unfair, dishonest, or unscrupulous advantage in academic work over other students using fraud, deception, theft, trickery, talking signs, gestures, copying, or any other methodology. Assignments deemed academically dishonest will receive a grade of 0 on the assignment.
