The Alexandrine Parakeet , Psittacula eupatria is along with the rare Nicobar parakeet Psittacula caniceps the largest of the parakeets. The English name of this bird is derived from Alexander the great, who is said to have taken few specimens of this species along with the Plum-headed parakeet , Psittacula cyanocephala and the Rose-ringed Parakeet Psittacula krameri with him on his return from India. Sadly, the 3000 year old tradition of taking birds from the wild continues to haunt this species till today. |
