In the Heritage Oaks ward, we just implemented a guest instructor program. Basically, we released 1 of our instructors so that we have an open spot each month. We then invited different guest instructors to come in and teach during that open spot. We are planning on using this to accomplish the following:
- Rotate in some of the Elders who work outside the quorum in YMs, Primary, Nursery, etc. This gives them an opportunity to get some face time with the quorum and helps build unity (i.e. everyone knows each other).
- Bring in special guests like a member of the Stake Presidency, or the Bishop, or someone from the High Priest group to come in and teach. A lot of times these guys have tons of gospel knowledge and insights and would love to come speak to the Elders (think "be a good man speech").
- Give new converts and perhaps even less-actives a chance to teach (with supervision of course).
- Let's the quorum members see some different teaching styles.
- Usually the people prepare a lot for these lessons and do a really good job. Not that the regular instructors don't. But these one off assignments tend to be a bigger deal for those teaching them (i.e. it's their moment to shine and they want to do a good job).
My 2nd counselor, who is responsible for quorum instruction, coordinates this effort. Each month we will discuss as a EQ presidency who should teach the following month. Then, my 2nd counselor will extend the invitation. We like to give these people at least 2-3 weeks to prepare, so that they are totally ready.
