| At the beginning of 2008, we decided we wanted to reiterate the importance of home teaching to our quorum members. We drafted 2 letters: Good Home Teachers - This letter was aimed at those who were consistently getting their home teaching done. We simply review the blessings that come from home teaching, thank them for their service, and reiterate a few house keeping items. Poor Home Teachers - This letter was aimed at those who were not getting their home teaching done regularly or at all. The tone is a little more reproving. We thanks these home teachers for their service, review the blessings that come from home teaching, and then challenge them to receive these blessings by improving in their home teaching responsibilities. We bucketed each quorum member into the "good" or "poor" home teacher category, then sent each member the corresponding letter via USPS. Yes, mailing letters is more time consuming and costly than email, but getting a letter in the mail tends to be more effective than email at getting people's attention, so we figured the cost was justified. We have seen a moderate improvement in our home teaching numbers since sending out the letters. I think it is important to remind quorum members every once in a while that home teaching is a priesthood responsibility, and that mediocrity is not acceptable and will lead to forfeit spiritual blessings. |
