Ensign Gift Subscriptions

Last December we wanted to get 100 percent home teaching.  We especially wanted our home teachers to make contact with the less-active families on their list.  So we decided to provide them with a gift or something they could bring to the doorstep with them.  This would serve two purposes:
  1. It would put something in their hands that they would then be responsible for distributing.  This would increase the likelihood that they would make their visits.
  2. It would give them a pretext for stopping by (i.e. sometimes with very-inactive people it's kind of awkward to make the doorstep approach).
At first, we were kicking around the idea of purchasing a christmas DVD (i.e. joy to the world).  But this turned out to be too expensive.  So we asked the bishopric if they would authorize gift subscriptions to the Ensign for less-actives in the ward.  They did.  And we ordered 30 single-issues of the December Ensign.  We also printed off a nice note and stuck it in the Ensigns (see attachment below).  We then handed out these single-issue Ensigns to the home teachers (1 for each less-active family on their list).  They were to present this copy of the Ensign to their families as a gift which represented a year's subscription to the Ensign, if they chose to accept it.  It they did accept the gift subscription, the home teacher would report back to us and we would get the subscription processed through the Bishopric.

This worked fairly well.  We handed out about 20 Ensigns and got 5 subscriptions out of it.  More importantly, our home teaching numbers were up significantly for the month and we were able to make contact with many of the less-active families that go unattended for most of the year.

Challenges
Many of the Ensigns will get left on doorsteps because people aren't home.  We created an insert for this purpose (see attachment below).
