Introduction

This Stations of the Cross relates the stories from El Sitio and El Salvador to the suffering that Christ experienced at the end of his life. From 1980 to 1992, El Salvador was engaged in a bloody Civil War where over 75,000 people died and where there was no ‘winner’. This war arose from centuries of inequity in the distribution of land and money that existed in the country. The poor and oppressed decided to engage in battle after exhausting many other options in their struggle to live a dignified life in which they could feed their families. In our country, we heard stories of the ‘guerillas’ facing the ‘military’. The U.S. government responded with support of the military of El Salvador as if the ‘guerillas’ or ‘rebels’ had ties to communist countries such as Nicaragua and Russia, and wanted to establish a communist republic.  The villagers and ex-guerillas we've met in our sister parish tell us their goal was simply to find a just way to farm or work and support their families.  Some of the people of El Sitio made the difficult decision to take up arms and fight on the side of the ‘guerillas', while many others spent several years simply trying to protect themselves and their children from being civilian casualties. This war came as a result of a call for justice and an end for oppression.

When we reflect and pray with the community of El Sitio, they always say special prayers for those engaged in wars in places like Africa and the Middle East. They know what it is like to survive war and pray that others in the world will never have to experience it. This service recognizes the suffering of these Salvadorans, but also the hope that they share, recognizing that at the end Christ conquered death through His Resurrection.
