The divinely mandated slaughter of the Canaanites is offensive to modern sensibilities. I'm not sure we can fully make sense of it, but it can help to see it within its native historical context. Of benefit here is a section of Chris Wright's book, The God I Don't Understand: Reflections on Tough Questions of Faith (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2008).
