Computer Graphics and Design is a hands-on, project-oriented course designed for students who have an interest in both computers and art.  Graphic designers—or graphic artists—plan, analyze, and create visual solutions to communications problems. They find the most effective way to get messages across in print, electronic, and film media using a variety of methods such as color, type, illustration, photography, animation, and various print and layout techniques. They also produce promotional displays, packaging, and marketing brochures for products and services, design distinctive logos for products and businesses, and develop signs and signage systems—called environmental graphics—for business and government. An increasing number of graphic designers also develop material for Internet Web pages, interactive media, and multimedia projects. This course gives students a feel for careers in computer graphics and graphic design.  This is a great place for students with artistic talent to express themselves using electronic media.  Students will be involved in peer critiquing of other student’s work to help them enhance the visual dynamics of their work.  Projects for this course would be excellent for an electronic portfolio.  Some examples of projects are magazine covers, business cards, banners, advertisements, magnets, programs, flyers, logos, cd covers, photo restoration, slide shows and independent art projects.

Desktop publishing (also known as DTP) is a hands-on, project oriented course which combines a personal computer and page layout software to create publication documents on a computer. Users create page layouts with text, graphics, photos and other visual elements using software such as Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft Word.   The term "desktop publishing" is commonly used to describe page layout skills. However, the skills and software are not limited to paper and books. The same skills and software are often used to create graphics for point of sale displays, promotional items, trade show exhibits, retail package designs, and outdoor signs.  Students gain real life skills by working on real publishing needs.  After learning the fundamentals, students gain real life experience using creative thinking, problem solving, and quality control by working on projects.  Students are provided with experience in creating a variety of publications.  Depending on the projects, students may gain experience using other programs such as Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop, etc.   Successful completion of this course will provide students with employability skills as well as valuable skills for use in post-secondary pursuits.
