WHAT'S IN AN URL?

  • What is an URL?

  • What do the letters URL mean? *

  • What does URL mean?  **

  • Look at the following URLs.  What do the emboldened terms mean?

            http://whitehouse.gov

            http://ucmp.berkeley.edu

            http://amazon.com

            http://democracynow.org

http://www.kalama.com/~zimba/lmchome.html   This is a tilda. It indicates a personal page.
  • Addresses, whether in the URL or in a document, must be typed in absolutely accurately.  The Internet can only locate the address if it is typed exactly the way the domain owner registered it.  So....

Check the URLs when you type them for:

misspelling         duplicate letters or numbers        empty spaces        correct periods (dots) or slashes

underscores        capital letters        using the wrong key: 0 for o, 1 for l or i or I, and 2 for z

  •  Practice what you just learned on the "Internet Worksheet" I'm handing out.

*Abbreviation of Uniform Resource Locator, the global address of documents and other resources on the World Wide Web.

**   The first part of the address is called a protocol identifier and it indicates what protocol to use, and the second part is called             a resource name and it specifies the IP address or the domain name where the resource is located. The protocol identifier                and the resource name are separated by a colon and two forward slashes. (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/U                               /URL.html)
