Audio and eBooks

The following list provides a wide assortment of reading resources for students and for teachers and parents to use with them.  These resources have been selected because they contain audio, flip-book, and interactive reading and literacy activities. 


Lit2Go: Lit2Go is a free online collection of stories and poems in Mp3 (audiobook) format. You can download the files to your Mp3 player and listen on the go, listen to the Mp3 files on your computer, view the text on a web page and read along as you listen, and print out the stories and poems to make your own book.

Little Lit: Here is a great website featuring Little Lit, the cartoon character! Storybook illustrators from around the world have contributed awesome animations and stories for you to watch and listen to! The site is full of games and stories!

International Children's Digital Library: A huge selection of books

AudibleKids: Audible, Inc. is the leading provider of spoken entertainment and information on the Internet. Audible specializes in the spoken experience, providing digital audio editions of books, newspapers and magazines, original programming, and TV and radio subscriptions. ($) - but has some free titles.

BookPALS StoryLine Online: Streaming video program featuring famous people reading children's books aloud.  Each book includes accompanying activities and lessons.  Kids love this site!

StoryBook Web: This website contains a captivating collection of activities for children aged 5-8 years. The site is based on popular children's stories by authors Scoular Anderson, Debi Gliori, Mairi Hedderwick and Frank Rodgers.  In addition to the range of interactive activities, you can watch and listen to the authors reading excerpts from their stories and answering some questions about how they get their ideas for writing.

FableVision: Browse around the FableVision reading room, for a great selection of original stories! All stories can be read online.

BookPop: You will love this site! Stephen Cosgrove has written many books and stories for the Web. You can read the books yourself, or hear them read to you!

Amazing Adventure Series: A fantastic site for engaged reading.  Read about or listen to "June the Prune" and "Blossom's Tale". Afterwards, do some fun activities based on the stories.

LibriVox: LibriVox provides free audiobooks from the public domain. There are several options for listening. The first step is to get the mp3 or ogg files into your own computer.  This site also encourages volunteer readers to contribute to expand the available recordings (maybe students?).

WOWIO: WOWIO is a new kind of online bookstore that enables readers to download ebooks for free.  Look in the Categories drop-down menu for "children"... then you can be more specific about the age group you are seeking selections for...

The Little Red Ship: Just a great story for young kids... one of my favorites.

MightyBook:  This is a fantastic resource!  A membership for an entire school/library is just $199/yr or just $30 per classroom, but the site contains a large assortment of free resources in all of their content areas.  It is an exceptional free-resource, the quality seems like it would be worth every penny of the membership fee.

Children's Storybooks Online: I nice selection of online stories for K-8 readers.

Storynory: Storynory has been publishing free audio stories for children since November 2005.You’ll find our own stories here about Prince Bertie - a modern prince who has been turned into a frog - as well as plenty of classics.

Free-Books: This site has over 100 free children's books listed that you can download in mp3 format.

Lil' Fingers Storybooks: A nice selection of interactive stories for Pre-K to 2nd Grade students.

Sebastian Swan Bookshelf: This site has some great interactive stories... they seem most appropriate for 2-5 grade students.  The format of these stories is something that could be replicated with books or stories, making those stories launching pads to further learning.

StoryPlace: StoryPlace, an interactive web site, came about to provide children with the virtual experience of going to the library and participating in the same types of activities the library offers. You'll need Flash 5.0 (or better) player plug-in to deliver stories and activities in multimedia and sound. Click here to download the latest version of FlashPlayer.

Inkless Tales: Listen to cool stories online, build a beast in the game section, read poems, and have lots of fun at this amazing website. Games, stories, poems, and music - Inkless Tales has it all. Check it out! Awarded an American Library Association "Great Web Sites" recommendation. Early readers.

TumbleBooks: The TumbleBook Library is an online collection of animated, talking picture books which teach young children the joys of reading in a format they'll love. It provides enrichment to students who are reading independently with a variety of high interest material. It also provides support to students who require skill building with a variety of exercises that can be matched with other areas of the curriculum. For everyone else, TumbleBooks are a great addition to a reading program that can be worked on independently by each student or by the whole class. ($) - $399 for an annual subscription for your school.

Wired for Books (Kids Corner): Featuring the stories of Beatrix Potter, including The Tale of Peter Rabbit with text, pictures, and audio.  Also, the main Wired for Books site is packed with all sorts or reading selections.  A really excellent site!

The Moonlit Road: Features storytellers from the American South. Featured stories change regularly, and are available in sound formats as well as in text.

Candlelight Stories: CandlelightStories.com offers the leading independent kids’ site on the Internet. We provide a safe and secure environment for kids to learn and have fun. In addition to publishing online children's stories and ebooks, they produce their own line of high-quality children's audio programs that present classics like 'Snow White' and 'Puss In Boots' with voice characterizations, music and sound effects. They also produce non-violent learning games and activities for kids.

Beantime Stories: This is part of a great learning website! Chateau Meddybemps has been named as one of the seven best language arts sites for elementary teachers. Beantime Stories offers a very engaging learning opportunity for kids.

Audio Stories 4 Kids: This is a site in the UK with a good selection of mp3 format books that you can download.  *Also, they have a really neat section (OTR Stories) of Old Time Radio stories.  This site was originally blocked by our BESS Internet Filtering system... worth unblocking!

Bab Books:  The site include a very nice selection of illustrated children's reading selections (flip-books) and in addition they have a selection of "Talking" Bab Books.

Merpy.com: Animated, musical, and interactive tales of Merpy, Jeremy Dragonfly, and more! This fun website has a new story every month, fun activities, and other adventures.

Bedtime Story: Tons of great stories for you to read, or have read to you, at bedtime or any other time. They all have pictures too! Some are a little long, like Alice in Wonderland, but most are nice and short.

BookHive: This site has a nice selection of book that have been read by different storytellers.  You need to have RealPlayer (Mac) to listen to them.

Between the Lions (PBSKids): This is a great site for emerging readers and those that teach kids to read... highly interactive.  They have a nice selection of interactive storybooks and many other fun resources to help new readers. (K-2)

Clifford Interactive Storybooks (Scholastic): Clifford The Big Red Dog: Interactive Storybooks! Phonics fun, games, and stories for early readers.

Kidspace (ipl): Internet Public Library... contains an extensive listing of children's books/authors resources. This isn't a specific link to audio or eBooks, but you can find them within this listing and so many other useful story/reading resources for kids to explore.

Stories to Read Online: This is an Australian School resource site.  It has a huge selection of flip-books and also a nice selection of audio-books for K-6 students.

RIF Reading Planet: Provides several animated read-along books. (K-3)
