2008 Summer Institute We had a new middle level CREST team at Schoodic this year. Dressed in bright orange CREST T-shirts, students and teachers learned about GPS-GIS, Ethnography, and Web Design. Community Atlas The goal of this project is to explore our community going back in time and to compare it to the present, documenting change. Students will examine and generate GIS maps to tell stories about unique aspects of change in our island. They will also collect first-hand accounts by interviewing local community members and these perspectives will be used to reflect important aspects of change in the island. Island ABC Map This fall the 7th grade language arts classes will continue working an Island Alphabet Book begun last spring with a CREST class. Locations (from A - Z) around the island have been photographed and marked with GPS points. Each page of the book will have text about the spot, a photo, and a map of Deer Isle with the GPS point indicated. Additionally, the students will visit the Island Historical Society to research each location, identify some one to interview about the location, and make a short one-minute iMovie about the location. And, finally we hope to create a website with an interactive map with all the information. On Our Island The CREST team will work with K-8 classrooms and Island Heritage Trust to develop guiding activities as each class visits one of the island's conservation sites. Classrooms will record and reflect on their visits throughout the school year. Classrooms will utilize photographs, original artwork, and audio to tell stories about their visits. Products will be organized into a website. 5 Star Websites The CREST team will work with Grade 5 students to help them learn basic web design and apply this learning to produce websites that represent things they are learning about during the year. We Want You! CREST Team members will activity promote increased participation by students, community members, and school staff throughout the year. |
