Welcome to the First Grade's Webpage!!!
Hello! My name is Rebecca Tyleshevski, but the students call me Miss T. I am looking forward to starting a new school year with a great class of First Graders. As many of you know, last year I taught Pre-K/PreSchool at DIS, and I worked diligently to incorporate Montessori methods and materials throughout each day. Although I will use some traditional materials in my instruction this year, I will continue to follow Dr. Montessori's example of guiding students toward self-discovery in the classroom. Each student will be part of a small guided reading group, where he or she will receive focused reading instruction for me daily. In addition, the daily schedule includes time for students to participate in extension activities, also known as Centers. In order to build strong social skills in the students, each member of the class will have ample time to work in partners and small groups, as well as in a whole group and independently.
Classroom Expectations
Students will be expected to:
1. Speak softly while in the classroom.
2. Show respect to ALL members of our school community.3. Raise their hand to ask a question or share information.

*We need classroom volunteers!!!!!
Volunteers are needed to assist teachers in Lunch and Recess duty after Eid, when our Hot Lunch program begins for the year. Parents would be asked to watch students, making sure they are following the rules and using quiet voices indoors.
Students observing differently sized balls rolling in the classroom. We made predictions of distance and then performed an activity to check our predictions. The students did a GREAT job of thinking critically about speed and distance!!  Students used their senses (except sight) to determine which fruit was handed to them. It was a great day of partner work and exploration!!

*Please make sure to send in your child's school supplies as soon as possible. If you need a copy of the First Grade Supply List, please let me know.
*Please check Snapgrades regulary to follow your child's progress. I will begin to update snapgrades after Ramadan.
*There are several fundraising programs going on at DIS this year, including Paper Recycling, Box Tops for Education, Cambell's Labels, My Coke Rewards, Office Depot Ink Cartridge Recycling, and more!!! These programs are great, because any money raised goes directly to the PTO, benefiting ALL students! Please let me know if you have any questions regarding donations, as I am also the fundraising coordinator this year.
