The Invisible, Visible

A Green Papaya Residency

About this residency

Green Papaya Art Projects is an artist-run initiative that supports and organizes actions and propositions that explore parallel approaches to the production, dissemination, research and representation of art in various disciplines.Their WEDNESDAYS i'm-n-love OPEN PLATFORM RESIDENCY is "an experimental and creative laboratory" for artists.

My residency follows after Angelo Suarez's residency in August/September, 2008.  I will be using the eight Wednesdays in October and November to generate discussions and mini-projects in the area of data visualization for advocacy. I will be focusing on two streams of inquiry: Visualizing Internal and Invisible Worlds and Strategies for Effective Use.

I am looking for volunteer-contributors for this residency! Learn more.

About me

My name is Diego Maranan, and I am an educator working in the fields of digital technology and dance. Past work I have done include research in translating dance notation into computer animation with the Dance Notation Bureau (NY) and TechBC (Canada), working with Judith Marcuse Projects on arts for social change projects; and investigating qualities of human movement in avatars from SecondLife.com with choreographer Sara Coffin (Vancouver).

I have worked in the field of information technology, conducted movement workshops, and collaborated with artists—including Donna Miranda and Dancing Wounded (Manila)—on both sides of the Pacific.

I studied Computing Science and Contemporary Dance from Simon Fraser University (Canada), and I now teach and develop courses in multimedia at the University of the Philippines Open University.

I enjoy finding or creating low-cost alternatives to ... pretty much anything. My recent triumphant culinary experiment involves making dense dessert balls out of natural peanut butter, cocoa powder, raisins, pinipig, and sesame seeds. At alam niyo ba na puwede kayong gumawa ng OK-na-rin na olive oil by blending a flavorless oil of your choice with a jarful of black olives and letting the mixture settle in your refrigerator for a couple of weeks?

You can reach me at diego[a.t]alumni[d.o.t]sfu[d.o.t.]ca.
