You should be vaccinated against Hep A. That is a newer vaccine that is
being pushed really for everyone (travel or no travel). It is a two
dose vaccine, you receive one now and one 6 months to two years later,
that you should start at least six weeks before you travel. I know it
is later than that…but something is better than nothing.
If you are not vaccinated against Hep B (you should be if you were in
college or high school…but double check) start that series. It should
be a three dose series.
Most adult doctors will not have Hep A (you can call…but you mostly
find that available in pediatric practices), but you should be able to
update your TDaP and start Hep B there. For Hep A if your doctor does
not offer it you can go to the Health Dept in your county to receive
that (you could also get TDaP and Hep B there if you only wanted to
make one trip!) and they will administer it at a discounted price…they
will not file your insurance!
Lastly, you should be vaccinated against Typhoid. That one is
tricky. Physicians offices RARELY carry it and the HD does not offer
it. Dr. Pepin (Anthony!) let me in on a little secret…it comes in an
oral form your doctor can call in to your pharmacy that you start
taking 1 week before you travel. Most doctors will just call it in for
you…it is a little expensive…I think it is $45 with my insurance. The
name is Vivotif if you decide to opt for it.
