Curriculum

This is what students will do to earn their Pilot Permit - Ultralight Aircraft certification (See Transport Canada's CARS 421.21):
  1. Provide proof of
    1. citizenship
    2. age (min. 16)
    3. medical fitness, which is one of:
      1. Civil Aviation Medical Declaration (Form 26-0297) with Part B completed by the applicant
      2. Medical Certificate (Form 26-0055), Category 1, 3 or 4
      3. Medical Assessment Letter (Form 26-0417), Category 1, 3 or 4
  2. Ground school: 20 hours.
  3. Dual flight training.
    • This means the student flies with an instructor, lerning to carry out predefined exercises, just like when learning to drive.
    • Each lesson takes about 2 hours and consists of
      • A preflight briefing of about 30 minutes,
      • Actual flight is about 1 hour and
      • A post-flight debriefing of about 30 minutes.
    • Total time depends on the progress of the student, which varies widely and averages to about 10 lessons (20 hours).
  4. PSTAR test - A written test the student has to pass.
    • 50 questions
    • Passing mark 90% (45 questions)
    • The test has to be corrected to 100%. This means the instructor has to teach the student the material related to the missed question and has to be satisfied that the student would now be able to answer them all.
  5. A student pilot permit is issued to the student.
  6. Big Milestone!: First solo flight. This means the student flies alone, without an instructor. This includes:
    • A regular preflight briefing of about 30 minutes,
    • One complete circuit, but not more. Flying time is about 7 minutes and
    • A regular post-flight debriefing of about 30 minutes.
  7. Solo flight training
    • This means the student practices alone the same predefined exercises as they carried out during the dual flight training
    • Each lesson takes about 2 hours and consists of
      • A preflight briefing of about 30 minutes,
      • Actual flight is about 1 hour and
      • A post-flight debriefing of about 30 minutes.
    • Total time depends on the progress of the student, which varies widely and averages to about 8 lessons (16 hours).
  8. Flight test. This consists of
    • A regular preflight briefing of about 30 minutes,
    • Flying all the exercises in about 2-3 hours with the examiner on board, but the student flying and
    • A regular post-flight debriefing of about 30 minutes.
  9. Pilot Permit - Ultralight Aircraft certification administration
    • The school makes a recommendation to Transport Canada to issue the permit for the Student.
    • The student
      • Takes (and passes) the Transport Canada ULTRA written test (passing score: 60%)
      • Pays the fee for the test and the permit.
    • Transport Canada issues the certification directly to the Student.
