Aircraft

Each aircraft must be registered in one and only one category, but the owner may select that category from a restricted list depending on the aircraft.

The aircraft DancAir is using is the Evektor Sportstar (also known as EVSS) and it is registered in the ultralight category as an "Advanced Ultralight". See the video below for a quick introduction of this aircraft.

Ultralight aircraft, as opposed to the gossip, are no longer flimsy kites. Even kites today are very reliable, high technology machinery, but ultralight aircarft are also serious flying machines. Their price range, however, is a lot lower than that of "certified aircraft". Perhaps the most cost effective ultralight aircraft is the Challenger. Of course, the next category up, like the Sportstar (which was the first ever aircraft to be registered in the Light Sport category in the U.S. and is still one of the leaders in the market), or the Flight Design CT series provide safer and better service and comfort, depending on how you intend to use them.

You have to be aware of the limitations associated with ultralight aircraft (compared to certified aircraft):
  • There are limits on aircraft weight and take-off weight, which, in turn, limit useful load.
  • Maximum 1 passenger for advanced ultralights, no passenger for basic ultralights
  • No night or instrument flying
  • No aerobatics
  • Only selected type and gear (wheels, skis, floats) combinations can be registered as ultralights (see the official list here)

You have to be aware of the freedoms
of ultralights (relative to certified aircraft) as well:
  • Lower insurance rates
  • Lower medical requirements
  • You can fly anywhere you would with a certified plane (including large international airports and cross border), but also, due to lower weight, you can land at many more locations (shorter and softer runways, or off-airport - which translates to safety)
  • Lower fuel consumption
  • Lower noise level
  • Less red tape
  • You can maintain the aircraft yourself
  • No annual inspection requirement
  • Parts you use do not have to be certified
