Safety is the primary concern and it's no coincidence that safety is the first
word of the first document DancAir Flight School Inc. suggests you read before
you decide whether general aviation (known in aviation circles as GA) is for
you.
While flying, if done right (and that's what DancAir teaches), is safer than
almost any other activity "normal people" do, it adds to the total
risk in your life.
What can and should be done about this
additional risk?
- It
is your job (as a pilot) to minimize the risk of flying and DancAir's job to teach you how.
- You
can elect NOT to fly. This is the ultimate safety measure. You, as pilot in command (PIC),
always have the final authority in the plane. Smart pilots frequently take
advantage of this option. If you have the slightest doubt, this is the option for
you. (It's much better wishing you were in the air than wishing you were on
ground!)
- You
and your family must be aware
- of
the risks associated with aviation
- that
the added risk of flying is very small compared to our routine risk taking (for
example driving), but flying
is not necessary in our every-day life
- that
flying is addictive, therefore once started, as opposed to the statement in the previous
bullet, flying will be necessary for the pilot's every-day well being. ("When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been and there you will always want to return." - Leonardo da Vinci)
- Switching instructors or schools:
- It is your job to switch instructors if you feel that cooperation and efficiency is not up to your expectation (no matter how good a pilot or teacher your instructor is). This is a safety issue and instructors are trained not to take this personally, but take it very seriously. Do NOT be shy when your safety is on the line!
- If you cannot find an instructor with appropriate chemistry at DancAir, switch schools. Again, do NOT be shy about this. We will not be offended and will value your safety much higher than our pride. (And we are proud of this anyway!) We will recommend other training units or you may find one yourself. Your training will count towards that at other schools.
