Case Studies and simulation software

This section deals with case studies of other robots which are of our interests and we will also have a look at the software used by us for simulation, CAD design and other tasks.

Study of Existing Robots

This section contains images and a bit of description of existing robots that are being used/tested by companies like NASA, DOD (Department of Defense, U.S) and other commercial RSV's (Remote Survey Vehicles).

Remote Survey Vehicle (RSV) 3D-R1

Remote Survey Vehicle 3D-R1, developed by 3DLM in partnership with Jobling Purser LLP as a lightweight, remotely-controlled robotic vehicle

The RSV has full track suspension and is configured to operate across varied terrain. It can be used with an existing wireless network; alternatively–for example, if utilized for disaster recovery or on a hazardous site–it can be developed to deploy short/medium term transmitters as it maneuvers.

An optional follow-me facility allows it to carry payloads (or casualties) safely behind rescue personnel.

Uses a track system.

Autonomous Drilling Rover (Test by NASA)

According to a press release [LINK]:

Some key points are in bold. Ok for one in the image they look a bit tiny, maybe like a toddler's tri-cycle. But see the videos below.

Scarab must be agile enough to travel miles over sandy, rock-strewn soil, but also serve as a stable drilling platform. Operating for months in total darkness, it cannot rely on solar energy or batteries for power. Instead it will use a radioisotope source that places a premium on energy efficiency. To navigate in total darkness, Scarab must rely on new, low-power, laser-based sensors.

...weigh at least 250 kilograms.

...The suspension also makes it possible for Scarab to raise its body as much as 21 inches off the ground, so it can straddle rocks or lean as it negotiates steep slopes.

Glenn Research Center is developing radioisotope power sources for deep space and lunar applications.

Development work continues on software that can use all of Scarab's motions to best advantage and enable it to navigate autonomously in the dark.  A field experiment planned for the end of the year will put driving and drilling in the dark together in a complete demonstration of the lunar mission concept.

Department of Defense Bots

Here are a few links of DoD bots. Have to write description for these bots. But till then have a look:

Robot Vision CAD

Information and Images from their Website http://www.robotvision2.com/Softwares/RvCAD/RvCAD.html :

RobotVisionCAD or in short RvCAD is a computer aided design for Image Processing and Computer Vision.  RvCAD's GUI presents users with a view where users drag and drop Image Processor Elements, and visually connecting them to form Image Processing Pipeline.  RvCAD is a tool used by scientists, engineers, mathematicians to explore Machine Vision and Image Processing algorithms.

Features

  • Drag and Drop UI, visually design Machine Vision Pipeline
  • RvCAD  runs on Win32 and most posix system, etc, linux, BSD and Mac OS X
  • Pipeline architecture scales to MultiCore, and SMP CPU.
  • Supports real-time live video processing from VideoForWindow, DirectShow(WDM), Video4Linux on linux and Video Digitizer on Mac OS X, compatible capture device.
  • Support reading and writing the following image files: avi, mpeg, bmp, jpeg, png, pcx, xpm, and tiff.
  • Customizable through loadable  module.  You can add your own custom libraries to RvCAD. Code Generators create the templates for your custom library elements. You insert your own C/C++ code into the specified locations. Compile, and add the result to your library.

STATUS: Untested

I tried it on my Vista HP laptop and it says the "something is out of date. Please re-download from the website." It would be advisable to check this on other PC;s before we conform it does not work

I get an application error with Windows XP SP3, after double clicking on RvCAD.exe. Do I need to re-compile or something?
