Just days
before the opening of Superman Returns, former Superman writer Roger
Stern sits at a table in the lobby of Regal Cinemas at the Pyramid
Mall. The table is covered with issues of Superman that he wrote, and
he is talking superheroes with passers-by. As Ithaca's link to the
world's first superhero, Stern is acting as the celebrity guest at the
theater's Superman Carnival, to promote the opening of Superman
Returns.

"I tallied it up at the end of the year and I think it was close to 10,000 miles I traveled that year," he said.
Despite the hectic schedules, he said he
enjoyed being a part of the Superman writing team and working with
creators like Jerry Ordway, George Perez, Mike Carlin and Curt Swan,
who is recognized as one of the definitive Superman artists.
"Curt's drawn Superman in every pose
imaginable," Stern said. "He's an incredible resource. It was great
working with him. He was in his 70s and still just as good as ever."

When the word got out that DC was
planning on killing Superman, a media frenzy ensued. Stern credited the
huge amount of press the story got on a slow news week.
In reference to the "select stories" being reprinted from Action Comics #600
- considering the total page count of this trade, it's likely that a
couple of the 8-pagers from AC #600 will be included, and not the
32-page Byrne/Perez story (which was recently reprinted in Wonder Woman Vol.3: Beauty And The Beasts TPB anyway).

I've drawn an original comic strip that will be featured in the
program book. It's a LI'L ABNER strip featuring the cast members in
their respective roles. Three panels are included here out of the 13 in
the actual strip. The producers will be providing me with extra copies
of the program book so that I may sell them to any Pérez completists
out there. All proceeds will go to the Moonlight Players, a non-profit
organization.
