Student Section

How do I add my scary story? To add your scary story:
  • Click Create new page at the top of the page.
  • In the Page name box, enter your name and the title of your story.
  • Select the button at the bottom to put the page under your school’s name.
  • Click Create Page.
  • After the new page loads, you’ll be in the Page Editor where you can type your story in the large box under your story’s title.
  • When you’re done, click Save at the top.

How do I edit my story? To edit your story:
  • Navigate to your story:
    • At your school’s start page, click View All next to Subpages.
    • A new window will pop up. Select your story.
    • Click OK.
  • Click Edit page at the top.
  • The Page Editor will load and you can make any changes you would like.
  • Click Save.

How do I add an image to my story? To add an image to your story:
  • While in the Page Editor, click Insert in the menu at the top.
  • In the new menu that appears, click Image.
  • A new window will pop up. Follow the appropriate instructions below depending on where you image is.
  • If your image is on your computer:
    • Select the Uploaded images circle.
    • Click Browse.
    • Navigate to where the image is on your computer and select the image.
    • Click Open.
    • Wait a moment for the image to be uploaded.
    • Click the image you would like to add.
    • Click the Add Image button at the lower right corner of the window.
  • If your image is on the internet:
    • Select the Web address (URL) circle.
    • In the box next to Image URL, enter the address to your image.
    • Wait a moment for a preview of the image to appear.
    • Click the Add Image button at the lower right corner of the window.
  • Once you’re done adding your image, click the Save button at the top of the Page Editor.

How do I add a video from Google Video or YouTube? To add a video to your story from Google Video/YouTube:
  • While in the Page Editor, click Insert in the menu at the top.
  • In the new menu that appears, click Video.
  • Click either Google Video or YouTube Video depending on where your video is located. The next steps are the same for both.
  • In the new window that pops up, enter the address to the video in the top box.
  • Change the title at the bottom to what you would like.
  • Click the Save button at the bottom of the window.
  • Once you’re done adding your video, click the Save button at the top of the Page Editor.

How do I add a video from my computer? To add a video to your story from your computer: These instructions are very similar to adding an audio clip so if you’re familiar with that, you’re ahead of the game.
  • While on your story’s page, click the plus sign next to Attachments.
  • Click Browse.
  • Select the video you would like to add.
  • Click Open.
  • Wait a moment for the video to be uploaded. When done the name of the video will show up under Attachments in blue.
  • Right-click the video’s name and click Copy Link Location.
  • Go to the Page Editor for your story by clicking Edit page at the top.
  • While in the Page Editor, select the keywords you would like to trigger the video (for example you might want the reader to see a video of a moving car when they click car chase):
    • Hold down your mouse button
    • Drag the cursor across those words. They should be highlighted in a different color.
  • With those words selected, click the Link button.
  • Click Web address.
  • Right-click the box and click Paste.
  • Click the OK button at the bottom left corner.
  • Click the Save button to keep your changes.

How do I add an audio clip? To add an audio clip to your story from your computer: These instructions are very similar to adding a video clip so if you’re familiar with that, you’re ahead of the game.

  • While in the Page Editor, select the keywords you would like to trigger the audio (for example you might want the reader to hear an explosion when they click BOOM):

  • With those words selected, click the Link button.
  • Click Web address.
  • Right-click the box and click Paste.
  • Click the OK button at the bottom left corner.
  • Click the Save button to keep your changes.

How do I share my story? To share your story:
  • Always check with your teacher first!
  • While viewing your story, click More actions.
  • Click Site sharing.
  • Under Invite people, select either as collaborators if you would like your teacher to be able to edit your story, or as viewers if you would only like him/her to read it but not edit.
  • In the box directly underneath that, enter the email address.
  • Click Invite these people.
  • Click Return to site at the top of the page to go back to your story.

Teacher Section

How do I create an account? To join a Collaboratory Google Project:
  • Email collaborator@collaboratory.northwestern.edu
  • Include your previous Collaboratory username.
  • OR include your school, address, city, state, zip, phone and your first name, last name, email and phone contact information.
  • After we verify your information we will create your account.

How do I get started? To get started:
  • At the front page for your class, click Edit page.
  • Change Home to your school’s name followed by your class’s grade.
  • Click the Save button at the top.

How do I add a student's story to the front page? To add a student’s story to the front page:
  • At the front page for your class, click Edit page.
  • Click Link.
  • Select Existing page.
  • Click the story you would like to add.
  • Click OK.
  • Repeat the above steps until you’ve added all the stories.
  • You can make the links into a bullet or numbered list:
    • Highlight all of the story links.
    • Click either the Numbered List (number next to dashes) or Bullet List (dots next to dashes) buttons.
  • Click Save.

How do I add a link to the Cybrary? Instructors – to add a link to the Cybrary: Once your class has decided on their favorite scary website, you can share it with other schools by adding it to The Scariest Cybrary.
  • On the Scariest Cybrary main page, click Add file.
  • Select the circle next to the web.
  • Paste the URL to the website.
  • Enter the title for the link.
  • Click Upload.
  • Click the checkbox next to your new link.
  • Click Move to.
  • Select your school’s name.
  • If your school’s folder has not been created, you can do so:
    • In the same menu, click New folder.
    • Enter your school’s name.
    • Click Save.
