As a result of a search on Thomo's Hole, I went looking for some information on a ship - HMS Mæander - and this is the result.

I added a brief history of USS Mongolia, a merchant ship pressed into US Naval service in World War I and famous for firing the first shots in anger from the US Navy against the Germans in that conflict

I added a section on Spanish Naval vessels during the Spanish Civil War. This principally looks at the armed trawlers that were used by both sides during that conflict. Later I will get around to doing something with the regular vessels of the Spanish Navy, but for the time being, you can look at the section on Spanish Naval vessels during the Spanish Civil War.

I started to look for a simple way to run Thomo's Hole a few years ago. I wrote HTML, I learned CSS and I used PostNuke as a CMS (and got tired of deleting SPAM). I then started blogging as well so I tried Blogger, Windows Live Spaces and Live Journal. I was still looking for simplicity and ease. I tried combining the Blog and the Web Page using WordPress. WordPress is great but it is first and second a blogging tool. It handles static pages but not well. I tried playing around with wiki's which were great for interlinking content and I could probably have moved the static part of Thomo's Hole to a wiki where it could become dynamic but then I ran across Google's Sites. The result is that the static pages from Thomo's Hole now have a home here. The only things I would wish to add here would be Google supporting Permalinks in Sites and, well, there was something else, I am sure I'll think of it eventually :-)
OK, this then is Thomo's Hole (not the blog but everything else). |
