Fessenden in the Cannes

May 6, 2008

Many congratulations to Larry Fessenden for his first appearance at Cannes: this summer, his face and credit will be on the Croisette with Wendy and Lucy, written and directed by Larry’s old cohort Kelly Reichardt (River of Grass, Ode, Old Joy).  Wendy and Lucy stars Michelle Williams; Larry co-produced and co-stars; the film premieres in Cannes’ “Un Certain Regard” section.

Beyond filmmaking proper, Ms. Reichardt also has worked for Kino International and taught filmmaking at the School of Visual Arts.  There, Ti West was one of her students.

The film also fortifies that ever stronger, and extremely visible, axis between several New York City film companies and those of Austin, Texas.  With Larry, Austin-based Anish Savjani co-produces; in addition to Old Joy, Mr. Savjani has produced a number of titles that premiered at Austin’s South by Southwest Festival and were released by Long Island-based IFC, though no word yet, at least to our ignorant ears, on who will release Wendy and Lucy. Larry too has deep connections in that group, for he has been involved in West’s films so far, and in addition to West’s extremely well-documented historical connections with the SXSW group, West also cast Greta Gerwig of Hannah Takes the Stairs in the upcoming The House of the Devil.

Larry tells us he won’t make it to France because he’ll be shooting his episode of the NBC series “Fear Itself.”  But, Larry, congrats!
