Passports (Pasaportes)

Passport Information

If you do not have a current passport, you will need to get one as soon as possible. It can take up to 4-8 weeks to get a new passport, so you need to apply immediately.

Renewals

If you already have a passport, and you simply need a renewal, you can do it by mail or in person. You need to fill out the form DS-82 (PDF) and along with the application you need to also send: your current passport, 2 identical passport photos and check to cover the fee. Please check the State Department (for US Citizens) site to make sure you are able to complete your passport renewal by mail.

New Passport Applications

If you are getting a passport for the first time, you MUST do it in person. You need to fill out form DS-11 (PDF) In addition to the application form, you will also need a Birth Certificate, two identical passport photos and an application fee.

Birth Certificate

According to the Department of State, a certified birth certificate has a registrar's raised, embossed, impressed or multicolored seal, registrar’s signature, and the date the certificate was filed with the registrar's office, which must be within 1 year of your birth. You obtain such a certified birth certificate from the jurisdiction in which you were born.

Photos

You will need to get two identical passport photos. The requirements for the photos are: (Note: you will also need photos for your visa—so take an extra set!)

  • 2x2 inches in size
  • Identical
  • Taken within the past 6 months, showing current appearance
  • Color or black and white
  • Full face, front view with a plain white or off-white background
  • Between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head
  • Taken in normal street attire

You may get your photos taken at Ritz Camera or Moto Photo, or you may check the yellow pages to find a location most convenient for you.

Where to apply for a new passport

There are two locations in Washington, DC where you may submit your applications. You will need to make an appointment. Visit the State Department's website for other pertinent information.

Expedited Service: There is an additional fee for first-time or renewal. We recommend that you arrange overnight delivery service for best service.
