These are the organizations that come together to build a creative, exciting Fellows Program. Below is a description of each. For an overview of the program, visit the
Fellows program page.
LearnServe International
The world is getting smaller
LSI recognizes that global issues affect our lives more and more each day. Are we doing enough to prepare our students to face problems such as poverty, food and water scarcity, political conflict, health crises, and environmental degradation? How can our schools better prepare students to be world citizens? And how do we develop future global leaders? Our future depends on how schools adapt.
We believe that schools must:
- Commit to addressing global issues
- Build awareness; increase understanding; inspire action
- Empower students and teachers to solve problems
- Align curricula with global issues
- Refocus their service programs
- Develop future global citizens and leaders
Can our students remain competitive?
The world is changing. Technology affects our lives. The nature of the global economy is shifting. And this is happening at a rapid pace. How are we preparing our students to respond to these changing demands and environments around the world? How are we training our future leaders? LearnServe International (LSI) has formed a unique consortium of public, private, and charter schools to respond.
Our schools can lead the way
Inspired teachers and trained, motivated students can bring these pressing issues into the classroom and into their lives. We believe that meaningful service programs, academic curricula oriented toward global issues, students trained in leadership and social entrepreneurship, collaboration between schools, and partnerships with organizations are the best way to face these challenges.
How does LSI help?
LearnServe Trips
We bring student/teacher teams to developing countries, involve them in programs that work, and help them to teach the lessons they learn to their own schools.
Fellows
We identify youth leaders from across the region and expose them to the programs of world-class institutions. We train them and challenge them to develop their own ideas for local or global change and to apply their findings in their schools.
Ashoka
Ashoka envisions a world where Everyone is a Changemaker: a global community that is able to respond quickly and effectively to social challenges anywhere, and where each individual has the freedom, confidence and support to address any societal need. Ashoka strives to shape a global, entrepreneurial, and competitive citizen sector, one that allows social entrepreneurs to thrive. Our community fosters innovation and desire for change, so that individuals find within themselves the potential to make change. Ashoka invests in social entrepreneurs because we believe they are the most powerful force and model for social change.
Ashoka searches the world for leading social entrepreneurs. After passing through a rigorous selection process, these social entrepreneurs receive a living stipend for an average of three years, allowing them to focus full-time on building their institutions and spreading their ideas. Ashoka also provides Ashoka Fellows with a global support network of their peers and opportunities to increase their impact individually and collectively. Once elected to the Ashoka Fellowship, these social entrepreneurs are members for life. Since 1981 Ashoka has selected more than 1,800 Ashoka Fellows in over 60 countries.
Youth Venture
Youth Venture envisions a world in which society recognizes, and young people commonly demonstrate, that youth have the ability to bring about lasting, positive change in their communities. They strive towards a society where youth initiative is expected, valued, and honored. This is achieved primarily through seeking out youth who want to make a difference and providing them with the means to do so. Youth initiative can both serve the broader community and greatly enrich how society helps young people grow and learn. By earning community respect, teens can transform themselves and inspire others to recognize the power and potential of young people, the problem-solvers of tomorrow-and today.
Center for International Education at Washington International School
CIE at WIS, the original organization out of which LearnServe was formed, continues to fosters teachers' and students' global consciousness and citizenship. CIE at WIS continues to hold an annual
Call to Action symposium. In the summer 2008 CIE formed a partnership with LSI such that LSI would continue to run the Fellows Program and LearnServe Trips and CIE would focus on the symposium and summer international trips including China.
Institute for Education
The Institute for Education is committed to supporting the Fellows program through sponsorship and collaboration.
For those in the highest professional and political tiers of the Nation's Capital, work is stimulating, challenging, and filled with opportunities to affect the major issues of the day around the nation and the world. But work here can be all consuming, affording little chance to meet and exchange ideas with others of differing outlooks. For more than a decade, professionals of every political persuasion have found common ground at the Institute for Education (IFE), a non-profit, 501(c)3 charitable organization. Founded by Kathy Kemper, the Institute for Education is a major supporter of LearnServe International.
FLOC Outdoors
For Love of Children's Outdoor Education Center facilitates healthy character development for youth and adults through adventure challenges, environmental education, and sustainability practices in a powerful outdoor classroom where experiential learning inspires individual potential and leads participants toward discovering connections between the natural world and their communities. The Outdoor Education Center has been giving many other children the opportunity for hands on learning through a variety of activities. Expert staff run day-long to week-long programs and summer camps where people of all ages are free to learn and grow. Their program includes youth development, professional and organizational development, adventure programming, facility rental, and retreats and trainings - all serving the clients needs.
