Internet Connection

posted ‎‎9 Nov 2008 08:21‎‎ by Shared Admin

ADSL broadband Internet connection has become available to the Village Hall. Initially this is restricted to the management committee and village organisations who are willing to help test the facilities. Operating on standard 'WiFi' band G (2.4GHz) most modern notebooks with built in wireless, or other PC's with an add-on wireless adapter, should be able to connect. The connection is secured to prevent unauthorised use of the Internet from outside of the Hall, to request access please contact the Chairman: Jeff Spencer.
The management committee reserves the right to charge for these services but is waiving fees for the present to encourage inovative use by village organisations.
Thanks go to Andrew & Arnold Ltd (www.aaisp.net) for a fault-free 'out of the box' installation. One of the lesser-known Internet Service Providers (ISP) - at least to domestic customers - they have established top ratings with business clients by focussing on reliablity, client communication and flexibility in service provsion, rather than 'free extras' of value only to home users. Notwithstanding the one-month notice contract - which allows us to move on if it proves a mistake - we look forward to an extended partnership in developing 21st Century facilities for hall users.

The first phase provides connection to the Village Hall office, shared with the Nursery so that they can directly access teaching materials and education 'red tape', together with coverage of the Charles Watts Room. Thanks to our solid brick walls, reliable coverage of the Main Hall requires installation of further wireless access points connected to a local area network running accross the building, to this end PC network and radio equipment have been purchased using the Improvement Fund - thanks to all users who have helped us raise money by attending the Chiddingfold Cinema and Bar. As always we welcome anyone to assist the committee with volunteer work.

Cinema comes to Chiddingfold

The inaugral presentation of Charlie Wilson's War in September was followed by the cracking latest Indian Jones adventure in October and the 'bodice ripper' take of Tudor history of The Other Boleyn Girl in November.  Hopes for an early release of the popular Mama Mia were dashed when the studio revoked all licenses after an illegal copy escaped onto the internet but we have booked this for the New Year noting that the subtitled version should work well with our music and dance license as well as the bar! Watch for notices confirming the date. Normally sceduled on the first Thursday evening of the month, turn up early (doors open 7.00pm for 7.45 start) and take advantage of the bar; patrons seemed pleased by the range of wines and beers as well as soft drinks on offer, they also appreciated the fact that we schedule an interval when these and other delights (yes, even ice cream!) are available.

Take a look at the upcoming films shown on the home page and click on the links to the Internet Movie Database (IMDB UK) to watch a trailer, it will open in a new window. These use Flash technology which, if you haven't already installed on your PC, is also freely available via link from the IMDB pages. You can also read reviews, scan stills and follow up all sorts of film miscellania from this site. Even better mark the dates in your diary to come and see them for real in the Hall and have a great time socialising with the possibility of drinking without driving.

A free email service for members of the village hall management committee has been established using Google Mail (Gmail) within Google Apps.
Each member has been given an email address firstname.surname@chiddingfold-hall.org.uk which at their choice can be read and written to from any standard web browser on Window based, Linux based or Apple computers. At personal choice members may integrate this with an existing email client e.g. Outlook Express.

Additional email addresses have ben created that act as an alias for individual roles e.g. chair@... and secretary@... (see Booking & Contacts) or provide mailing lists for groups of members e.g. committee@chiddingfold-hall.org.uk

Web Master

posted ‎‎29 Jun 2008 10:18‎‎ by Shared Admin   [ updated ‎‎9 Nov 2008 10:04‎‎ ]

There is no web master employed for this site, like most village hall activity it is entirely voluntary and unpaid and shared between the members of the management committee.
We have experimentally adopted Google Sites as a free hosting service for the public site (all we pay for is the domain name) and have also introduced Google Apps for internal collaboration between committee members. This means that interested members have the right to collaboratively edit the web pages as and when neccessary.

If you find errors or omissions please send an email to admin@chiddingfold-hall.co.uk and one of us will review your suggestion.
