Welcome to Algebra II, perhaps the greatest mathematics course you will ever take.

Course Description: This course focuses the properties of the family of functions including linear, quadratic, and radical functions. Students will be able to represent functions as verbal statements, equations, tables, and graphs. This course will also include a unit of the fundamental principles of plane geometry encompassing the properties of geometric figures, angles, perimeter, area, and volume. Throughout the course, scholars will be asked to model real-world scenarios using algebraic equations and to solve quantitative problems arising in daily life.

Chavez Classroom Expectations:

In order to have a productive and safe classroom, scholars are expected follow the Chavez Scholar Code of Conduct:

1. Respect Ourselves

2. Respect Others

3. Respect our School Community

4. Respect Learning

5. Seek High Academic Achievements

To maintain a productive and consistent learning environment, some specific classroom guideline are listed below.

  • Go Bell to Bell: Students are expected to be in their assigned seats and prepared to start class when the bell rings. Additionally, students must be engaged in a learning activity until the teacher dismisses class.

  • Stay Positive: Students are expected to come to class with a positive attitude towards learning and to persevere when challenges arise throughout the school year.

  • Be in Class: Student will not be allowed to leave class for any reason other than emergency use of the bathroom or for medical emergencies.

  • Get Help: Students that need additional support to meet academic course requirements will be expected to attend office hours and/or Saturday Academy.

Topics

We will be studying the following topics:

In Quarter One:

Unit One – Equations and Inequalities

Unit Two – Linear Functions

Unit Three – Linear Systems

In Quarter Two:

Unit Four – Quadratic Functions

Unit Five – Polynomial Functions

In Quarter Three:

Unit Six - Geometry Basics

In Quarter Four:

Unit Seven – DC-CAS Prep

Unit Eight – Rational Exponents and Radical Functions

Materials

All scholars must come to class ready to participate in the lesson. This includes bringing:

  • A writing utensil (pencil is preferred)

  • A scientific calculator

  • Current homework assignments

Student will keep a well-organized binder in the class that will be checked bi-weekly.

Interim Assessments – 20%

All of your courses will give Interim Assessments during the last week of each quarter. In Algebra II, these will be in the form of 70-minute cumulative exams. The Interim Assessments are the way that scholars show a thorough understanding of the course content. For this reason, all Algebra II students are required to pass the first three interim assessments by the end of the school year in order to receive credit for the course. These assessments may be re-taken on scheduled Saturdays until passed. Scholars that need additional support to pass their interim exams can attend office hours and/or Saturday Academy.

Assessments – 35%

All other quizzes and tests will fall into the Assessment category. We will have one Mid-Quarter Test each quarter and we will have a quiz every other week. This means that we will have an assessment every week. If a scholar is absent for a quiz or test, they will have one week to make it up before the grade is recorded as a zero. Scholars that receive poor grades on assessments will be encouraged to retake them in order to improve the grade. Quizzes and tests can be retaken only within one week from the date they were returned to scholars.

Homework – 20%

Most scholars learn by doing and therefore homework is a crucial element to this class. Homework is expected to be neat, thoroughly attempted, and on-time. Each assignment should be labeled with the student’s name, the assignment’s name and the date. The following rubric will be used to determine each homework grade.

Late Homework policy:

  • All homework turned in on time may receive up to 100% of the possible points.

  • All homework turned in within one week of its due date may receive up to 50% of the possible points.

  • All homework not turned in within one week of the due date will receive a zero.

Classwork – 15%

Many classes will involve activities such as warm-ups, group work, and projects. On-task behavior directly contributes to this grade.

Read/Writes – 10%

Read/Write assignments are given during ever other workshop period.

Extended Absences

Scholars that are absent for a week or more are expected to meet with us to set a schedule for make up work.

Textbook Policy

Scholars will be assigned a textbook that should be kept at home or in their locker. Scholars are responsible for the safe return of the textbook at the end of the year and will be charged a fee of $75 for missing or damaged books.

Discipline Policy

Disruptive behavior will lead to the following actions from the teachers:

  1. Reminder
  2. Warning (verbal or non-verbal)

  3. Reflection assigned

  4. Dismissal from class

Dismissals or repeated misbehavior will require communication with parents and/or guardians.
