Hello to all students joining the Anatomy of Film module 2008 -2009.
I'm Mark, your teaching instructor, and you will see me in your pratical workshops. We shall explore many aspects of film production including script development, storyboarding, camera operation, lighting, sound recording and editing. All this will lead to you making a 90 second film.
Weeks 1 to 2: Paperwork , H&S, Risk assessment...hey when do we start to film? If you missed the workshop cover H&S etc then you will not have signed the agreement form I handed out meaning you will NOT be able to borrow UWE camera kits. See me to amend your status.
Week 3 already: Hopefully you are enjoying the Anatomy module, OK its been all paperwork and no action at the moment but we are impressing upon you dear student the need to work under the guidance of "Professional Practice"
From now on we start to learn all the practicals we will need to make our film, so we'll cover using the camera, how to film, scripting, storyboarding, what sort of shots to get, lighting, sound...oh man the list appears endless...but its all do-able, so remember to attend your workshops regularly, if you miss a session you will not be signed of as proficient in what ever kit we were working on and you will not be able to hire said piece of kit.
No kit = no film = no module pass.
If you have missed a workshop then it is in your best interests to contact me and your academic explaining your abscence. We will then attempt to give you one on one training time permitting allowing you to be signed off against what ever kit training you missed.
15 Oct..have just uploaded my script for DAY 54, its not yet finished and a work in progress, started some two years ago and....it seems Channel 4 have a very similar drama going out soon called "Dead Set", which appears to be very similar to my premise, oh er!!
Week 4: Have uploaded a file covering the manual operations of the Sony VX 2000. This weeks workshops cover using the camera in manual record mode. Have a read of the document and also the file covering filming techniques as well.
Week 7: OK you guys, you've had two weeks of theory workshops now its back to the grind. This week we will be looking at Storyboards and how to use them effectively. The storyboard document is now available for you to look at online and print off. Make sure you attend this workshop as it should be fun so make sure you bring your colouring pencils.
Week 8: Sooouuuunnnnddddd! We'll be looking at sound gathering, and going out with the cameras and mics. This week you will be a news crew covering a breaking story. I will be looking for continued good camera work, composition and movement etc PLUS clear sound recoding. Sound will make up 50% of your film, if your photography was out of focus you would'nt use it, same goes for poor sound quality. The handout is available for download over on the right under files.
Week 9: Reading week, NO WORKSHOPS, WHHO OOH!! But...muggings here (Mark) will be around should you wish to discuss technical issues with your project or go back over kit operations, just find me in MB20.
Week 10: Lighting. In class we will be playing with the Lowell lighting kit. Leraning how to set up 3 point lighting, using gels and reflectors and ligfhting using everyday lights, such as table lamps. You MUST attend this class as I will be signing you off as competent to loan the lights, miss this workshop and you will not be able to borrow the lights. Check the files box to the right where you can read and download the Lighting handout.
