3. Final 20% of Semester Grade
Project worksheets will be available on the Quia website. There is a link to the Quia website from the Business Department Website.
Students are allowed to work ahead and do worksheets as they wish so they don't get behind. You should go to the Learn It Online
website for each project and do the sample questions before attempting the worksheet. Utilize the opportunity to re-do a worksheet
if you do not score well.
Project written tests will also be available on Quia. There is only ONE attempt allowed and it is timed. Make sure you have reviewed
the Learn It Online website and the worksheet before attempting the written test.
Lab assignments and some lab tests will be completed through the SAM 2007 website. The lab projects and assessments that
are assigned through this website are automatically graded and a report is generated which explains what you did correctly and
incorrectly. You are able to correct mistakes and re-submit the assignments up to three times. You are only allowed ONE
submission for the tests (assessments).
There are some lab assignments that cannot be completed online. Sometimes you will need to submit the assignment to me to be
graded. Most of the time I will prefer that you save your assignment in a folder I have set up for you to do so. The folder is
located on the Sdrive. Click on s:/HS/hsapps/Computer Science Homework/Block (A or B), then you will find a folder with your
name on it. This is the only folder that you have permission to access. Save your assignment in this folder when instructed
to do so. Rarely you will be required to print an assignment and you will be instructed as to when you are supposed to print.
The grading scale is as follows: 90% - 100% A 80% - 89.9% B 70% - 79.9% C 60% - 69.9% D 59.9% and below F
B. Make-up work: Late papers will NOT be accepted. You will have access to all assignment information via the website and calendar. You will know in advance what we will be doing on the day you miss or be able to find out. You will be required to hand in work on the day it is due, or try to make other arrangements with the teacher upon your return. Email the instructor with any additional questions you may have concerning work missed. In most cases, you will also have access to the lesson in the form of PowerPoint Presentations for the lesson. Make-up work will be accepted from students with excused absences only. (Unexcused absences receive a zero for any assignments missed). The student will be given one day for each day missed to make up the assignment. If the assignment is not handed in on time, the student will receive a zero for that assignment. (This is school policy, NO EXCEPTIONS). If you know you are going to be absent you are required to have the absence approved and to get the assignments you will miss before leaving. These assignments are due upon your return to class. It is YOUR responsibility to find out what work you missed/will miss. Any ZEROS you receive will disqualify you from any and all rewards you may have incurred such as the final exemption incentive.
Due Dates: Due dates are available via the website and the calendar on the website. Of course due to circumstances beyond anyone's
control, sometimes dates have to be modified. These will always be available on the calendar, so you should check frequently. Most
projects are due (including worksheet, and all lab assignments) on Thursday which is also the day of the test. Students will be given
one week in the form of a grace period in which to complete any assignments that are not completed by Thursday. There will be no
additional class time given to complete these assignments so they must be done at home, during academic catch up after school or
during Friday school. Assignments will not be accepted after the grace period has expired.
Homework: Computer Science involves a lot of practice and this entails a lot of work. Students are expected to work on the assignments
at home in the evenings and on the weekends. Most of the information that is available through the website can be downloaded onto
individual computers for use at home in case there is no internet available at home.
C. Concurrent Credit – Qualified students may be able to receive college credit for this course. A packet of forms must be filled out completely and signed by parents to receive this credit. You will be given this packet of information the first week of school. Those students successfully completing the course will receive 3 hours of college credit from Otero Junior College. This amounts to nearly $1000 worth of college credit. The documents are required by Otero Junior College and include one page that is to determine in-state tuition classification. This page must be accompanied by a copy of the parent's driver's license and a car registration (those are the two forms of identification that seem to be the easiest to produce). Students will receive an additional 25 points extra credit upon returning the college forms to Ms. Powell.
II. GENERAL CLASSROOM GUIDELINES
A. Tardiness: Students will be in their assigned seats, with all materials, ready to begin work when the tardy bell rings. Upon entering the classroom, students should unpack their laptop, plug in the power and mouse (if desired). Studnets in room 315 should also plug into the wired network to increase speed. Students not meeting these requirements will be marked tardy and may, as outlined in the handbook receive ISS based upon the number of incidents of tardiness. If a student is more than ten minutes tardy, it will be counted as an absence and apply to the absence policy as outlined in the handbook. Three tardies are considered an absence and will impact the final exemption policy negatively.
B. Classroom procedures:
a. Beginning class – When you enter the classroom, take your assigned seat, setup your computer, plug in to the electrical outlet AND connect to the WIRED connection. Connect to Synchroneyes. Check your email or get right to work on prior assignments
b. Printing – When and if you are required to print a document, the following procedure MUST be followed for printer use: i. Only ONE student is allowed at the printer at a time, that student will gather all papers that have printed while they have been there and distribute them to their owner’s ii. Paper will be used from the basket beside the printer BEFORE new paper will be loaded iii. Paper is loaded with the blank side on top iv. Make sure paper is tapped on the table to make it square on the edges before loading it in the printer to avoid paper jams v. If you have received papers that have been graded, put a diagonal mark through the side that has been printed and put the papers in the basket by the printer vi. Papers that have been printed on both sides will be thrown away vii. All papers that are printed must have names PRINTED on them and not WRITTEN on them. Any paper that does not have a name on it when it comes out of the printer will be thrown away. c. End of Class – Class ends when the teacher says it is done, not necessarily when the bell rings. At that time you will shut down your computer, and store it in your backpack. Books will be CLOSED and placed against the front edge of the table with the copy holder on top. Push your chair in before you leave.
B. Food: Candy and pop will NOT be allowed in the computer lab. Seeds, toys, games or cards, will NOT be tolerated in the classroom.
C. Materials required: You should always have with you the following: paper or notebook, pencil or pen. However, in this class, the vast majority of the work will be done on the computers. Textbooks must be left at the computers for use by other students.
D. Textbooks: You will be issued one textbook Shelly Cashman Series Microsoft Office 2007 – Introductory Concepts and Techniques Windows XP Edition. You will be held responsible for any damage or loss of that book. If you lose your book, no replacement will be issued until you have arranged with the office to pay for the lost book ($125.00). You are not allowed to write in your textbook and if writing is found in your textbook, you may be charged for the damages.
E. Cheating: Students are encouraged to ask questions of other students and work together to solve problems, however, any student caught copying or allowing their work to be copied will receive a zero for that assignment. Invariably I will have a group of students attempt to submit someone else’s work as their own. I don’t remember a semester going by that I haven’t had it happen at least once. This is a serious offense and will not be treated lightly. Also, it is VERY easy to recognize cheating and can be proven to anyone that it happened. In addition, the student that DID the work will also receive a zero since they allowed their work to be copied. Don’t let this happen to you, it invariably happens on an assignment worth a lot of points and can really hurt your grade. Remember, ANY amount of points for an assignment is better than a zero!!!
D. Behavior: Students will be treated as young adults. You are expected to conduct yourself accordingly. Profanity, excessive talking, sleeping in class and disrespect for the teacher or your fellow students will NOT be tolerated. Discussions by students involving the use of alcohol, drugs, weekend parties or their personal sexual escapades will not be tolerated in this classroom. First offenses will result in a parent conference with students explaining the topics with parents. Subsequent occurrences will result in a conference with the parents and the principal. Discussions involving drugs and alcohol may involve discussions with the local law enforcement officials.
E. Procedures: Students will enter the class in an orderly manner, go to their designated seat, unpack their computer, plug it in to both
the electrical outlet AND the network wire. Upon being dismissed from class, students will re-pack their computers, close their book and
place it toward the front of the table with the copy holder on top. The number of the book AND the copy holder should be facing the
back of the room.
F. Seating: Students will be assigned to a seat for the duration of the semester. The teacher will reserve the right to adjust the seating arrangement in the classroom at ANY TIME
G. Discipline referral: Students who cannot conduct themselves in the proper manner in the classroom will be referred to the principal for disciplinary action.
H. Hall passes: Students will be allowed a maximum of three hall passes per semester. These hall passes are for emergencies only. Those students who still retain all their hall passes at the end of the semester will receive 25 points extra credit and a pride card for each one they have remaining.
I. Vandalism: Any student caught vandalizing any school property will be referred to the principal for immediate suspension.
J. Attendance: The attendance policy shall be that of the school district. See school policy for more details.
K. Computer Privileges: The use of the computer equipment furnished by Crowley County School District is a privilege and not a right. A student may not be granted use of a computer until a Pledge Form and Acceptable Use Policy Form are signed and returned to the office. Once a student has been granted computer privileges, these privileges may be revoked at any time if student is caught violating any of the terms on the Acceptable Use Policy or if the student is found to be causing damage to the computer in any way. Any student caught in inappropriate sites on the internet will have their computer privileges suspended. If a student loses computer privileges, it will be up to him/her to find alternate methods for completing their assignments. Chatrooms, messengers and pornographic or vulgar sites are considered violations of the Acceptable Use Policy and grounds for suspension of computer privileges. Students must NOT share their password with other students as tracking of inappropriate sites will be performed and tracked according to username. |
