THE CCHS BAND PROGRAM
CONCERT BAND - This is the core group from which all the other groups are formed. Jazz, Marching and Pep groups are all extensions of the Concert Band. The Concert Band performs approximately three to four formal concerts per year, attends the state large group festival, sponsors the regional Solo & Small Ensemble festival and performs for graduation. The main focus of this group is to develop musicianship to its highest degree through method books, small ensembles and the highest level of quality literature. Optional activities offered are Solo & Small Ensemble festival and auditions for regional honor, college honor and All State groups.

ACCENTS LIKE THIS "^" - This is a Jazz Ensemble created from interested concert band members who demonstrate, through an audition process, their ability to perform the proper styles and the caliber of musicianship required. It will consist of as close to standard big band instrumentation as possible. CCHS will sponsor as many groups as near proper instrumentation will allow (5 saxophones, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, and piano, guitar, bass and set drums). The main focus of Accents Like This "^" is an understanding of true American music through learning jazz styles, articulations and improvisation.

SMALL ENSEMBLE - Small Ensemble work helps individual musicians put to use every aspect of music learned in the concert band. Sometime during the school year students will be assigned a small group from which a piece of appropriate literature will be prepared. Options will be for the group to perform its selection in concert or at the Solo & Small Ensemble Festival. Student will also have the option to select, prepare and perform a solo for the Solo & Small Ensemble Festival. Other options will be to perform with the CCHS Brass Quintet, CCHS Woodwind Quintet or CCHS Percussion Ensemble. These groups will be formed by audition and at the director's discretion.

MARCHING & PEP BAND - The Marching Band will perform at least one football game, Homecoming parade and as many other parades or marching activities, during the school year, as time and interest allow. The band will also be represented at the Air Force Academy Band Day. Starting in the 2003-04 school year the marching band began participating in the Colorado Bandmasters Association Southern Regional marching festival. The purpose of the Marching Band is to expose students to basics of marching and maneuvering. The Pep Band will perform at as many Football, Volleyball and Basketball games as time and interest allow. The main focus of the Pep Band is to aid in the athletic program, entertain those attending the sporting events and to create an atmosphere of enjoyment and camaraderie for band members. The Pep Band is one of the most popular aspects of the program and a volunteer group. It requires time outside of school and students must be eligible per CHSAA and Crowley County School District standards. The director expects students attending the sporting event to participate in the group. The Pep Band, as well as other extracurricular activities, is the main basis for earning points for lettering awards in instrumental music.

TRI-M NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY - CCHS sponsors a local chapter of the National Music Honor Society, Tri-M. This organization is set up to honor those students who show an exceptional ability and interest in music. Students must apply and pass the high standards of musicianship, academics, cooperation, leadership, service and character. Student responsibilities will be to aid in whatever way possible to building the music program at CCHS. Chapter responsibilities to the student members will be to enhance their musical and personal growth. Prospective members will be allowed to apply at the end of first term.

WMS Instrumental Music Offerings

BAND - WMS offers two bands, Symphonic Band (seventh & eight grade students) and the Cadet Band (sixth grade students). This is the basis from which most of the formal instruction will be done. The Symphonic Band performs approximately three to four formal concerts per year, attends the state large group festival and aids in sponsoring the regional solo & small ensemble festival. The Cadet Band performs two concerts per year and the main focus is to complete Book 2 of the selected Method. SOLO & SMALL ENSEMBLES - Small ensemble work helps musicians put to use every aspect of music learned in the full band. Sometime during the school year students will be given the opportunity to begin preparation of a Solo, Small Ensemble or combination. The goal will be for the musician(s) to perform the selection at the Solo & Small Ensemble festival currently hosted by Crowley County Schools in Ordway. Students will be expected to perform to the best of their ability considering proper personal practice and preparation can be exhibited.

MARCHING & PEP BAND - The Marching Band will perform at the Homecoming parade and as many other parades, during the school year, as time and interest allow.
