WILLOW FOR BIO-ENGINEERING

For River / Wetland Restoration, Erosion Control and Slope Stabilization

Bioengineering,Faggots,Bundles, Spilings, Poles, Posts and Truncheons

Bioengineering is the use of living plant material such as willow to provide stability to soils in situations where stability has been compromised. We supply willow as bundles of live spilings (2.5metre stems of 1-2 year growth) Live posts (1.8metre sections of trunk) live truncheons (1 metre long, thick stems) and faggots (bundles of assorted dried or live willow). These willow products can be combined by engineers into many different types of design for the purposes of soil stability. More usually willow spillings are weaved around posts buried to a depth of 1 metre, soil is then back filled against these posts and spilings to gradually create a wall of willow. These walls can then be arranged in terraces according to the height of the slope and the particular engineering design. Every design is different and willow can be used creativly to satisfy the demands of each engineering challenge.  Willow is ideal for bioengineering because it produces wood that is strong and flexible and more importantly develops a fine and extensive root system from freshly cut trunks or stems burried into the ground. These roots provide the required soil stability in situations where soils would readily wash away or slopes would fail and collapse.
