Who We Are

Quiz Bowl is an academic competition for both high school and university students that tests knowledge through cooperative team question rounds in a Jeopardy-like format.  On the university level there are two major organizations that regulate Quiz Bowl, NAQT and ACF, each of which has its own national championships.  Teams are comprised of four interested undergraduate students in any disciplines.  Quiz Bowl is derived from the now defunct College Bowl.

A typical round in a tournament is comprised of two teams of four students each competing to answer read-aloud questions fastest.  A lock-out buzzer system is used to determine the most rapid responder.  A neutral moderator reads the questions and judges validity of responses.  General questions are called 'toss-ups,' and when a team answers a toss-up correctly, they receive the exclusive chance to answer three "bonus" questions.  Correct answers are worth ten points each, while incorrect answers to toss-ups are negative five points and incorrect answers to bonus questions incur no penalty.  Rounds are regulated either by number of toss-ups or time.  The team that wins the most rounds wins the tournament.  Many tournaments require participating teams to write packets of 25 toss-ups and 25 bonus sets, which are then used for other teams' rounds.

Brigham Young University Quiz Bowl (BYQ) is a BYUSA sponsored club.  As such, we support BYUSA's mission to cultivate a sense of belonging, refine skills and talents, provide divine-centered leadership, create meaningful contributions, and foster a commitment to future service.  The BYQ charter states, "The mission of BYU Quiz Bowl is to broaden and enhance BYU students’ knowledge and understanding of the world through providing an open and friendly learning environment to practice for and compete in national Quiz Bowl tournaments."  Requirements for membership are "Dedication to learning and willingness to cooperate with team members."  Please feel free to stop by our club meetings!
