Buccaneer Bay had one OMER’s Award and it went to Tarra Love from Knights Elementary School, The Lost Labor of Heracles Division 1. The nomination was made by the style judges.
“Tarra Love’s performance as the ‘Barbie’ character was exceptional. Barbie brought the entire audience into the ‘Greek Idol’ experience. Her non-verbal body language remained true to character and made it believable. She acted superbly and her enthusiasm showed through. Tarra WAS Barbie. Great Job!”

This year is our 25th Anniversary as a state member of Odyssey of the Mind. At state tournament we will be having a special event…a Parade of Flags (and in this case it will be a T-Shirt as the flag). What I need from all of you is to ask your team's if they would like to be our region's representative in the Parade of Flags at the beginning of the awards ceremonies. Please ask your team if they are interested, and then let me know. I will put all of the teams interested in a hat and draw the winner. This team will also need to dress-up (decorate themselves) for the event in a pirate theme. I will be getting with the winning coach/team prior to state to make sure all is set and their "costumes" are done. This team will also need to decorate our "flag" with "buccaneer" items. Let's really jazz it up!!! Please send me an email should your team want to be our region's representative in the parade. Due date for this drawing is Noon Wednesday March 25!! |

This is a note from our state webmaster regarding online registration for all teams advancing to state:
Hello!
Congratulations on having a team advance to the Florida Odyssey of the Mind Tournament in Orlando on April 4th.
Scheduling is now underway and we need your Team Registration completed immediately so we can include you.
My name is Richard, I created the online registration system. With the help of your Regional Director and other state workers I'll help you complete your registration. Please let me know of any concerns you have so that I can help you get this done.

Two things needed to complete team registration for state
1) Review all entered information, especially the Team Members / Coaches conflict sections - update info where necessary.
2) Add a completed State Worker registration.
Let me offer some tips to help you complete your registration. A shortcut to the Team Management page (same as it was during the Regional Phase): http://floridaodysseyofthemind.org/FLO/TeamManagement.php
Common problems I've heard about
1) Members trying to create a new team - This is unnecessary. Just update your existing registration.
2) Members can’t remember their username / password. Send me your Member Number / Member Name and I'll send you your Username. If you can't remember your password I'll reset it for you. Only the user that registered the team can Update / Pay for the team.
Remember: Do not register a new team, review registration of team qualified for state (all other registrations will be hidden after regional date). Once a team is complete, all teams must generate an invoice - even if that team is free (primary teams). Important caveat - All teams paid via PayPal are subject to a $3 surcharge. I'd suggest all primary teams use the Pay By Check method of creating an invoice so they don't get charged $3 via PayPal for an otherwise free team.

Training of judges is required every year. If you have signed up to be a judge, remember:
1. ALL JUDGES MUST ATTEND TRAINING AT SPOTO HIGH SCHOOL (8538 Eagle Palm Dr., Riverview, FL 33578) Map attached.
2. Judges must be 18 years of age or older.
3. Judges will undergo 6 to 8 hours of training from 8:00am-1:30pm (approximate end time)
4. At the problem specific training, judges will view the Problem Specific Training Tape, review the problem they are judging, talk about the problem clarifications for their problem, and discuss judging and problem set-up procedures with the Regional Problem Captain for the problem. If judges come to this training prepared, problem captains will endeavor to get everyone out of training in a timely manner. We (the region) will supply soft drinks for this training, however judges will need to bring a brown bag lunch for this training session.
5. Judges may be required to assist with problem site set up on the night before or morning of tournament. Judges must be available (necessary) from early on tournament morning until tournament has concluded. (This includes waiting to be released by the Scoreroom following the viewing of the last team).
6. Judges with child or student on a team: Judges will be unable to see their own child/team perform at tournament.
7. Judges will be given their report times for Saturday, February 28, 2009 (tournament) at the Saturday, February 21, 2009 training. Each problem will have their own set-up and start times.
8. Judges should be available for participation at State Tournament on Saturday, April 4, 2009. Location is University of Central Florida in Orlando. Judges at state will have one night of lodging (shared accommodations) paid by state. Each region is required to supply a quota of judges to State Tournament; our region prefers volunteers for this necessary position.

We are asking everyone ever involved with Florida Odyssey of the Mind to send pictures of past teams/tournaments to our State Secretary Pam Huminski (spammy137@cfl.rr.com) in electronic form ASAP or no later than January 31, 2009.
Also, we are looking for past State t-shirts and other memorabilia for the display, and t-shirts for a quilt that will be raffled off at the State Tournament on April 4, 2009 at UCF. If you wish to donate shirts for the quilt, please let me know. We need these shirts no later than January 9th.
