December 9th - Court of Honor

August 1st - Excalibur in West Monroe

July 18th - Sassagoula Falls Adventure Golf

June 17 - Court of Honor.  This will be the last meeting of the year.  The Scouts will be awarded any advancement over the past three months.  We will have some refreshments and talk about our activities over summer.

Summer Camp (6/2 - 6/8)

Summer Camp went very well.  We had seven of our scouts and one scout (Tanner) from T8031 attend TL James.  Those attending were Colt, Ty, Ross, Peyton, Nicholas, Shelby, and Clay.  ALl worked on their initial rank advancement in a new summer camp program called Brownsea Island.  The weather was cooler than most summer camps with temperatures in the low to mid 90's.  Nights were bearable - generally in the mid 70's.  Weather was excellent with no rain.  Original information sheet

Chemin-a-haut Campout: Great Time! (April 25-26, 2008)

We had 6 Scouts and three adults come out this past weekend.  The Scouts worked on fire building (all completed their Fireman Chit, 2 worked on their totin Chip, and all went on a hike to identify signs of animals.  The Scouts also competed in a fire building challenge where Colt won the event.  However, they all were great in that they could build a fire and get it burning in a short time.  See the photos from the weekend in our Troop Photo section.

Scout Expo / Kiroli Park (Sat March 5th)

Scout Expo is more of a time where Scouts from this area have fun, play games, learn about Scouting topics, and get to talk with various leaders from other units.  This year we had a booth where we made personal first aid kits.  We did this last year and had many supplies left and it was worthwhile for Scouts to "be prepared" in any situation.  Attending were Ty, Colt, Ross, Nicholas, Michael, Clay (who manned the booth) and Zach and Barlow who competed in the Rodeo cook-off.  The first aid booth went over very well and we won second place in the event!  Nice job guys !

Our two chefs prepared a wonderful meal!  They were provided a bag of ingredients and some spices (from Chef Hans) and had to create a meal in under 3 hours.  They were graded on presentation, taste, and creativity (I think).  We won first place for presentation and first place overall!  These two Scouts won this event for two years in a row!   We had a few Scouts who watched these Scouts create the meal and are preapred to participate next year.

Thanks again to the Scouts and also our leaders (Dawson and Steve) who came and enjoyed the wonderful cool weather.

Dad and Lad / March 8th

The weekend of March 8th at Dad and Lad was quite fun.  I want to thank Dylan, Cameron, and Zach who came out to support our Webelos who have now crossed over to the troop.  We helped build a bridge that the Webelos used to cross over.

On Tuesday, March 11th, I was again honored to have two of our Scouts (Gaige and Barlow) at the Council Banquet.  This is where we recognize the Scouts who attained the rank of Eagle the past year.  I also had the pleasure to announce the Silver Beaver recipients this year.  The Silver Beaver award is given to adult leaders who have devoted their time to serving yout within the council.  The recipients this year were Kathy Moore, Marrion Perry, Melissa Johnson, and Scott Branch.

This past Saturday, we had Clay, Peyton, Ross, Ty help plant new plants in the flower beds around city hall.  We spent 1-1/2 hrs working along with Jeff, Dawson, Nicole, and Tammie to get the plants in the ground.  Travis helped organize what we were doing and watered the plants.  The plots still need pine straw and two more beds still need planting after some additional work is done on the beds.  I want to thank those who came out to help!  Community service is part of advancement!

Barlow Holley Eagle Ceremony

Congratulations to Barlow Holley who received his Eagle award on March 2, 2008.  I also appreciate the Scouts who came out to support Barlow and to help with his Eagle ceremony: Zach, Zac, Kevin, Tyler, Dylan, Ross, Ty, and Clay.  It is also great to see our leaders: Rick, Larry, Dawson, and Steve.  Barlow, the Troop is proud of your accomplishments.  Barlow is our 25th Eagle Scout of Troop 56.

Lake Claiborne / Driskill Mountain (2/15-17)

We had a fun, but rainy time at Lake Claiborne.  Hopefully your son learned some lessons about being prepared for the weather!  Photos from the trip are located in the 2008 troop photo section.

We focused on properly setting up camp, patrol method cooking, 5 mile hike, Totin Chip (proper use and safety for handling an ax, saw, and knife), and a look from the highest point in Louisiana - Mount Driskell at 535 feet.

Klondike Derby (January 18-20, 2008)

The Klondike Derby was a great success and fun this year.  We had 6 of our Pack 323 Webelos Scouts join us who did quite well on their first time out.  The Troop won first place in the compass course and the Ahkio Sled Race and 3rd place overall in Saturday's events.  We came in 4th place in the sled race on Sunday.  The Webelos also did well and placed above some of the Troops in the sled / fire building race.  Nice job Webelos!

Robert Thomas also came down from northern Arkansas and led the compass event and cooked a chicken this year.  I want to thank our adults: Rick, Dawson, Steve, Renee, and Tammie who helped us with driving and arranging for the food!  We ate well!  See the photos on the 2008 photo link on the left of this site.

Robert Thomas

Robert Thomas is doing well in Arkansas.  Please send him an email when you get the chance at Robert.G.Thomas@arkansas.gov.

The Holley's from Quebec

Barlow and his parents (Sara and Travis) spent time in Quebec over the holidays.  Ask Barlow about his travels when you see him next.

Barlow Holley, Eagle Scout 10/3/07! ! !

We are extremely proud to announce that Barlow Holley has successfully passed his Eagle Board of Review.

Barlow has been in Scouting most of his life, starting in Cub Scouts where he earned the Arrow of Light Award, and then onto Troop 56 where he has now earned the rank of Eagle.  Barlow will be planning his Eagle Court of Honor where he will receive the actual Eagle badge. His Eagle project helped to beautify the area around the town square.  Barlow is currently in 10th grade, attending school at OCS, and is very active in the band and theater. Barlow, congratulations from Troop 56 and a job well done!

Robert Thomas Farewell "Party" (10/2/07)

As some of you know, Robert Thomas, an assistant Scoutmaster with the troop and outdoors extrordinaire, will be moving this Saturday to work in the forestry service in Lawrence and Randall counties in Arkansas.  We had a nice celebration with him at the troop meeting in appreciation of all his help with the troop over the years.  Robert is amazing in his outdoor skills.  We will miss him at Winter Camp with his Lost Outpost, Klondike with his roasted rabbit, ability to light a fire in any weather, and a wonderful friend.  Robert brought his magic fire starter which was really interesting.  I want to thank all who came and spent some time with Robert!   Go to the PHOTOS page to see tonights photos.
