THAT OF CATHARTIC RELEASE The first zine was sort of a jumping off point - a "let's see what we can do with nothing" experiment. We discovered, to our delight, that we had much more than nothing all along! We had Jeff Honeyman, who lent his drawings to the project. We had Benjamin Critton, who designed the cover and contributed poems. We had several other excellent contributors, and some donations of time and effort that made the pages come together. In the end, it was 44 pages long, and it was ours! We published! There are still copies available of the limited edition numbering 500. Price: $2. Contributors: Benjamin Critton Jeff Honeyman Jon Isaac David Lineal Adam Rothstein Miles Strucker B - The second project (and first failure?) After our first move, we tried to push the boundaries a bit. We made "business poems": business sized cards inscribed with poems on the back. It was a set of six. Supposedly these were offered for sale, but in the end they could not even be given away at the subway entrance to Union Square in NYC. Ah well... the New York City residents are some of the best at refusing free slips of paper. We forgive them, they did not know that these cards carried witty little remarks about the difficulties of the writing process. Furthermore, we are not bitter about the failure. Publish and learn, yes? There are a bunch of these left: free. If you express interest, you might even get free shipping. Scab Suite - a novella
Our most recent work is a 106-page novella hand-bound in soft, card stock cover. The author, Adam Rothstein, says: "It is a story about scabs; because everybody has had a wound and a resulting scab once in their life." This is Brute Press' first singular work of fiction, and we are proud to enter the territory of our industry in a style writ large, as it were. Nothing is truer than the fictional, so it would seem. Scab Suite is now available, in the first run. But wait, there's more! Rosalynn Ford has designed and crafted twenty Custom Cover Editions, that feature hand-stitched, three-dimensional artwork. These will be released for special order and at special locations, TBA. Price: Regular Release - $5 (now available); Rosalynn Ford Special Edition - $9 (TBA) THAT OF AN ON-GOING FLUX Brute Press Live Brute Press Live is the current working name of our online arena; it is a stadium in which we force our brutes to dance, and perhaps fight, for your enjoyment. You decide if they live or die by taking them home with you or leaving their corpses to feed the carrion-sifting internet data grinders. In other words, Brute Press Live is work published direct-to-web. It will be made available in as many formats as we can gather, though assuredly in html text and in pdf format. These works are available for your purusal on the site, and also so that you can download them and re-publish them yourselves in any format you wish. Brute Craft Part of the founding logic of Brute Press is that there is as much creativity in writing/arting/composing as there is in publishing. With the on-going mutation of previously solid media, this is even more true. We are strong proponents of seizing the means of production from both the top and the bottom of the productive relations. What this means is that we love our craft: both writing and publishing and printing/web piloting/arting/binding/cooking. Yes, cooking! And we want to share it all. So we will have craft-shares, instructionals, open discussions, and means of sharing all of these, under the same principle of sharing skills that is part of all we do here at Brute Press. So: check it out! Our library of Brute Craft material will only grow! Also For Free! Also to see a complete list, go to the page. The Brutalitarian In addition to being a wicked clever name, The Brutalitarian is a serial journal of essays, loosely maligned as "non-fiction". Theory, though sometimes utterly rank with pretentiousness and as entertaining as watching Slavoji Zizek sweat under the hot lights of a lecture hall stage, (anyone? anyone?) is really the life-blood of thought and the stubborn super-ego of all writing. And so, Brute Press must take part. Although there is no set publication period for this series, it will be up-dated as regularly as we find folks with something to say, which will probably be fairly often. Not as crucially important as it is generally informative and thoughtful, this is not 120-proof theory, nor Diet Theory, but a very comfortable, refreshing, and libationary well-mixed Whiskey Theory Sour. Cheers. Always there, even when you don't need it: The Brutalitarian Free/gotothelinkforallthestuffjerk. Et Tu, Brute? Har har. For serious: Brute Press seeks to constantly subsume its own boundaries, and its lipid-infused cell wall is you. You hold our ctyoplasm in; you receive our protein creations outward both through active transport and diffusion. So get involved already! See our And much more....!
