The Judges

Bernardo Ruiz
Bernardo Ruiz is a writer and documentary filmmaker. Most recently, he wrote, directed and produced a biography of Roberto Clemente for PBS’s award-winning history series, American Experience. The film was awarded the 2008 ALMA Award for Outstanding Made for Television Documentary. Bernardo has written or produced programming for PBS, the Discovery Networks, MTV and the National Geographic Channel. He has been awarded grants from ITVS, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Paul Robeson Fund for Independent Media, Latino Public Broadcasting, as well as a New York Foundation on the Arts fellowship in film.  He is the co-producer of the award-winning “The Sixth Section,” a groundbreaking documentary on immigration which aired nationally on the Public Television series P.O.V. in 2003.













Callid Keefe-Perry is a member of Rochester Monthly Meeting of New York Yearly Meeting and travels in the Ministry with his wife Kristina.  For the moment,  he is also a middle school Humanities teacher in the Metrowest area outside of Boston.  Vocationally he is interested in the practices of Early Quakers and issues of discipline and transformation within Monthly Meetings.  He gives great acknowledgement to the power that language has to transform our lives and dreams and has at various times been known as a storyteller, author, and poet.  As a continuing project he is the webmaster of theopoetics.net, a website devoted to Postmodern Thought, Theology, Poetry, Narrative, and (Re)Imagining the Divine.  He is currently writing several journal articles about theopoetics which published within the next year.  Callid firmly believes in the possibility of a Just world while he still lives.


Gail Walker
Gail Walker is a 20 year veteran of public radio, responsible for producing news and public affairs programming. As a communications professional she has worked in print, video and radio and has taught a number of communications courses at the high school and college level.  Gail currently works as a radio producer for the UN Radio News Service – a pioneer project called the UN Radio News Service which provides regularly updated audio content -- short news and feature-length reports, interviews and other raw audio -- under tight deadline, via the Internet, on UN system-wide activities, campaigns and events around the globe. In addition to her work in Radio, Gail has also produced videos about the work of the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization/Pastors for Peace in Nicaragua and Cuba. She has also served as a moderator for numerous video programs for Manhattan Neighborhood Network – the public access station in Manhattan. Gail’s wide-ranging experience and interests cover international and domestic issues -- from the impact of sanctions on civilians across the globe to the plight of homeless women living in New York City. She has traveled extensively throughout the Middle East and Latin America. Gail was born in Wisconsin and currently resides in New Jersey. She has a MA from The New School.

Co-founder/Board Member Global Nomads Group.  Chris is now producing Media as Country Director for Search for Common Ground in Rwanda. Search for Common Ground, an organization dedicated to transforming how the world deals with conflict.


Patricia Schall Ph.D
Patricia L. Schall is a professor and the Coordinator of the Accelerated Certification for Teaching 1 Program in the Graduate Education Department at the College of Saint Elizabeth in Morristown, New Jersey, where she teaches courses in literacy education, foundations of education, action research, and writing and research for doctoral studies. In prior years at Saint Elizabeth, Patricia served as the Chair of the Undergraduate Education Department and taught secondary education and English methods courses to undergraduate students. She also supervised many practicum and student teaching field experiences. Patricia holds a BA in English from Montclair State University and an MA in Communication in Education and a Ph.D. in English Education from New York University. She holds certifications as a Teacher of English and a School Library Media Specialist. Prior to her current position, she was the Director of the Educational Media Center at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ, and she taught high school English for 12 years at Watchung Hills Regional High School in Warren, NJ. Patricia serves on and co-chairs national commissions for the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Conference on English Education. She is the Region 1 representative to NCTE’s Standing Committee on Affiliates, representing the interests of affiliates in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, and Delaware. She is NCTE’s New Jersey SLATE (Support for the Learning and Teaching of English) representative, an organization that seeks to influence public attitudes and policy decisions affecting the teaching of English language arts at local, state, and national levels. She is the Vice President for Membership and Recruitment for the New Jersey Council of Teachers of English and serves on their Executive Board. She has presented at numerous NCTE and NJCTE conferences, as well as at other national conferences for teacher educators. Patricia currently is working with her colleagues in the Graduate Education Department on establishing professional development schools in local districts. She values her work teaching teachers and teachers-to-be. She also enjoys writing and has published articles in professional journals and coauthored a book published by Teachers College Press: Protecting the Right to Teach and Learn: Power, Politics, and Public Schools The New Jersey Council of Teachers of English named her NJCTE 2008 Educator of the Year, and in that capacity she also received a 2008 New Jersey Governor’s Award in Art Education.
