Betton Hills Preparatory School 2008-2009 Middle School Science Dear Parents: I am excited to be joining the middle school this year to teach science. I am new to Tallahassee and looking forward to being a part of this school’s community. I grew up in Fairbanks, AK and my undergraduate degrees are from the University of Alaska in Biology and Psychology. More recently, I lived in Maine where I attended the University of Maine and received an MS degree in Ecology and Environmental Sciences. I have experience as a science professional and as a science educator. I have done research on environmental toxins, conducted studies of water quality, and worked on the management and preservation of natural areas. As an educator, I have worked with schools and communities on environmental education projects and on science enrichment programs at the middle school level. My classroom will be a place where students are active participants in the study of science. Students will come up with questions, design projects, make systematic observations, record data, and interpret their results. We will also discuss the context and history surrounding scientific discoveries, and students will be encouraged to pay attention to current events in science. In addition to in class projects, students will participate in the Leon County Science Fair. Please feel free to contact me, either by email or by leaving a message at the office, if you have any questions, would like participate with a certain lesson, or have talents or information to share. I will post our weekly schedule, directions for projects, and other information regularly on the Betton Hills website. I look forward to an exciting and productive year working with you and your child! Sincerely, Chandra McGee cmcgee@bettonhills.com |
