 Artist Trading Card (ATC*) Submission Guidelines They say a picture speaks a thousand words. At Be A Voice Arts, paintings butchered in an act of domestic violence exist not only to have a voice, but as a means of potentially saving lives through outreach and advocacy. BAVA challenges ATC artists, victims, survivors and other supporters to use their artistic voices and Speak UP Against Domestic Violence.
The challenge: Create an ATC* at standard 2.5"x3.5" (size of a playing card) with the theme "I Have a Voice!" Any use of media is welcome. Please label the back of your card with your name (only first name if you don't feel comfortable sharing last). If speaking up empowers you, feel free to attach your personal story** Simply fill out the attached submission form and return with your completed ATC.

*Your contribution of an Artist Trading Card cannot be 'traded' with another ATC. In technical terms, that makes your contribution a miniature work of art as oppossed to an actual Artist Trading Card, yet ATC is a readily identifiable image to many readers, hence the use of the term. However, your 'trade' has contributed to a fund dedicated to spreading awareness. By supporting BAVA, your efforts will shed light on an ugly taboo that lurks behind many doors in our country: Domestic Violence. In essence, an ATC may potentially save a life, by inspiring and encouraging a victim to leave an abusive relationship and seek help. In addition to the ATC, your $5.00 donation will fund the SPEAK UP project and enable BAVA to continue to reach agencies nationwide. Through the SPEAK UP project, your donation will make a difference in the life of a victim, and may mean the difference in her becoming a survivor. Promotion of BAVA's traveling exhibit, 'How Do You Paint the Portrait of Domestic Violence', will also be made possible through your donation by mailing publications to domestic violence agencies and organizations. http://www.beavoicearts.com

**The physical cards will become property of BAVA. Yet as the contributing artist, you will still retain copyrights to your image--of course! If and when ATC's are to be printed in any type of publication or displayed in a gallery setting, contributing artists will be notified and credited. Personal stories may be shared in addition to ATC's as a means of inspiring and educating others. Yet if you wish to remain anonymous, please indicate in the appropriate box in the submission form. Five participants will be selected to receive a signed ATC created by BAVA founder and president, Michelle Johnson Major. These five winners will also have the opportunity to have their work published in SPEAK UP-I HAVE A VOICE, BAVA's first edition newsletter.

Artist Trading Cards (or ATCs) are miniature works of art about the same size as modern baseball cards, or 2 ½ X 3 ½ inches (6cm X 9cm). Cards are produced in various media, including dry media (pencils, pens, markers, etc), wet media (watercolor, acrylic paints, etc), paper media (in the form of collage, paper cuts, found objects, etc).

I HAVE A VOICE!
My creative vision for these ATC's is this:
I want to create a work of art where the cards hang on my wedding dress as an interactive gallery piece. The reason I am creating this wedding VOICE piece comes as an outcropping of a painting I did called "Til Death". 'Til Death' is a painting of me as a bride, tortured and hopeless, with 'X's" over the mouth to symbolize the secret and shame and inability to speak up during a relationship of abuse. After viewing that portrait, one would think that my wedding dress would be a symbol of the loss of hopes and dreams for a marriage and a future, yet in actuality, the dress will be transformed to symbolize the literal artistic VOICES that have come together as one to "Speak Up Against Domestic Violence". I want to hang all the submitted cards from the dress skirt and viewers can come up, turn the cards over in their hands, move around the piece and experience the "Voices!" I am hoping to generate enough response to fill up the skirt. I think it will be a very powerful piece and full of hope! Help me fill the dress with YOUR artistic voice.
