Each spring Barclay hosts a Spiritual Formation Conference on our campus, normally during Holy Week, which provides an ideal context for developing a deeper and more intimate relationship with Christ through participation in various spiritual disciplines and exercises. This conference is open to the public and is offered completely free of charge. The theme for the 2009 conference, held April 6-9, was "Soaring in the Spirit," based on Isaiah 40:31:
"Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles."
The featured speaker for this year's conference was Chuck Conniry, vice president and dean of George Fox Evangelical Seminary in Portland, Oregon. Chuck began his tenure at Fox in 1998, following the completion of his Ph.D. at Fuller Theological Seminary. A gifted teacher and mentor, Chuck continues to serve as professor of pastoral studies while carrying out his administrative responsibilities at the seminary. Chuck is also an accomplished writer, having published numerous articles and book reviews. The title of his most recent book, Soaring in the Spirit: Rediscovering Mystery in the Christian Life, is inspired by the passage which served as the theme verse for the 2009 conference. Chuck spoke during chapel each morning, Monday through Thursday at Haviland Friends Church, and facilitated follow up sessions each evening in the Barclay College Student Center. If you weren't able to join us in person, you can listen to Chuck's messages online. Just visit our Spring 2009 chapel webpage and click on "listen now."
