Week of November 9 - November 13, 2009
Homework Policy Overview Homework is assigned on a weekly basis. Students receive a packet on Friday that is due back on the following Friday. The homework cover sheet includes class activities and parent information in the top portion, and homework assignments in the bottom portion. This cover sheet is the most important means of communication from the teacher to the students and parents. Please read it on Fridays as some information are time critical (field trips, class projects, etc.). The average student should spend about 45 minutes per night on homework. Some students will need additional time to read a book and study for tests. Assignments An average homework packet includes language worksheets, math worksheets and puzzles, and spelling activities. Additional social studies, science and writing projects may also be assigned. An optional extra credit assignment is often included. The cover sheet also includes spelling and vocabulary lists to be studied during the week for tests on Friday (spelling) and the following Wednesday (vocabulary). Book Reports Four book report projects will be assigned. Students will have approximately four weeks to complete their book report projects. Specific books (biographies, Newbery Medal winners, etc. ) must be chosen for these projects. You will be notified via the homework cover sheet when the book reports have bee assigned and what genre of book must be chosen. Books chosen by the students for these reports will be verified with me. Parents' Responsibilities Although assignments should be completed independently, parents do have an important role. Go over any directions and give help only when needed. Emphasize responsibility, effort, and improvement. It is important to the learning process that you spend time correcting the work together before turning it in. You will learn your child's weaknesses and problem areas. It is also important for you to help your child study for weekly tests - studying is a skill that has to be taught. Goals and Grading Homework is the chance for students to practice skills and think more deeply about subjects covered in class. Equally important, it helps students develop the study habits, responsibility, and pride in their work that will be needed throughout their school years. homework is graded on completeness, effort, and neatness, not perfection, using the number system found on the report card. "3" (meets the standard) will be given when the homework is done well and on time. "4" (exceeds the standard) will be given only if students complete optional extra credit assignments when included in the packet. Other grades are "2" (partially meets the standard) and "1" (unable to meet the standard). |
