Fourth Grade Curriculum

Language Arts
Our Language Arts program is the SRA Open Court Reading 2002 series, a research based program that has proven very successful in teaching children to read with fluency and comprehension.  Every six weeks students will be assessed to monitor progress in comprehension, skills, vocabulary, spelling, fluency, and writing.  Literature selections such as Island of the Blue Dolphins, By the Great Horn Spoon, and Esperanza Rising will enrich our language arts program.  Our writing lessons will focus on summaries, narratives, responses to literature, and research reports in alignment with the fourth grade state standards and in preparation for standardized testing in March and May.

Mathematics
Our newly adopted math series by Pearson Scott Foresman is designed to cover all of the state standards in mathematics.  Students will be given many opportunities to develop problem solving and reasoning skills by discovering and investigating math concepts through hands-on experiences.  Students will be assessed three times this year to ensure that they are on track to meet state standards.

Social Studies and Science
Our focus in social studies is California history.  We will also read related literature selections and participate in video conferences with California state parks.  Our science program focuses on investigation and experimentation through hands-on inquiry based experiences.  Our program is divided into strands of earth, life, and physical science.  Students will be assessed at the end of each of the three units.
