The process for building student schedules begins with parents' and students' careful review of the Babylon High School Curriculum Guide, published online in early February.
During February, classroom teachers in the five major subject areas (English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Foreign Languages) send course recommendations for their students to the Counseling Center. These recommendations are based on the individual student’s performance during the first semester. During this same month, counselors visit the English classes in grades 8-11 to discuss graduation requirements and academic planning for the coming year. Course selection sheets are distributed, completed and collected during one classroom period.
Following the class meetings, students meet individually with their counselors to discuss their course selections and their teacher recommendations for the coming school year. After the individual meeting, each student is given a copy of their course requests to review with their parents. Students are directed to return the signed course selection sheet to their counselors within one week. This process is generally completed by the end of February.
Following the course selection period, the administration determines the number of sections that will be created for each course. This decision is based on student enrollment requests. The master schedule is created and modified to ensure that students receive their required courses, and, as much as possible, the electives which they have chosen.
In early June, after the master schedule has been completed, a copy of each student’s courses for the coming year is mailed home. At that point, students are advised to make any changes or corrections by contacting their individual counselor. Changes may also be made to students’ schedules in late June based on their performance in class for the last two marking periods, and/or on their performance on New York State Regents exams and New York State assessments in English and Mathematics.
After June 29th, no changes are to be made in the student's course selections. This is necessary to ensure a smooth start to the school year, including adequate staffing, appropriate room assignments and balanced class sizes.
