Academic Monitoring On-going Yearly Counselors monitor student progress on an on-going basis on progress reports, report cards and individual teacher reports. 
Breakfast with Your Counselor 4 times a year Yearly A new program that invites parents to meet with their children’s counselors to discuss general topics such as scheduling, college tests, peer relationships, etc. Counselors and parents meet in groups for one-hour sessions four times per year. 
College Awareness Day May Yearly In early May, the Counseling Center sponsors a day for all staff and students to wear a tee shirt with a college logo on it. Teachers spend time at the beginning of each period discussing a college and outlining programs available at the school. 
College Application Review September / October Senior Year In September and October of senior year, all seniors meet with their counselors individually and/or in a large group to discuss the college application process. 
Course Selection February Yearly In February, counselors visit classes to review graduation requirements with students and to assist with the course selection for the following school year. Students will then be scheduled to meet individually with their counselors to finalize their selections. In June, course selections are mailed home to parents for final approval. 
Drop-out Prevention Program On-going Yearly Counselors at BHS, in conjunction with the counselors at Western Suffolk BOCES, provide special assistance to those students who are considering dropping out of school. Alternative High School and GED programs can be explored. 
Employment Day May Yearly In May of each year, students who are planning to work full time are given the opportunity to attend Employment Day through the Western Suffolk Counselors’ Association. 
College Night  Spring Grades 9 - 11 In the spring, students in grades nine through eleven and parents are invited to attend an evening College Fair with admission reps from colleges throughout the United States. This is offered in an alternating year pattern. 
College Admissions Workshop Fall Junior and Senior Years In the Fall, all juniors and seniors and their parents are invited to attend a college admission program that features admissions representatives from various colleges. The college counselors review sample applications and explain how decisions are reached. 
Career Portfolio Updating Fall Yearly Each fall all students in grades 7-12 update their career portfolios by answering a series of questions related to their age, grade and personal and educational goals. Student portfolios are completed during a full period classroom session. 
Financial Aid Night January Yearly This program is presented each January. The most up to date information pertaining to the FAFSA and the CSS Profile is reviewed. This program is generally attended by the parents of juniors and seniors but is open to all parents. 
Junior/Parent Conferences January Junior Year In January of each year, a letter is mailed to the parent of each junior inviting them to set up an appointment with their child’s Counselor. Each conference is approximately one hour in length. The counselor will discuss post high school planning according to the needs of the individual students. 
Meet Your Counselor Groups Fall Freshman Year 9th graders meet with their counselors in a small group for a brief high school orientation. Students will review study skills, attendance requirements and be encouraged to participate in extra curricular activities. 
Military Information On-going Yearly Any student who wishes may meet with his counselor and appropriate representatives to discuss opportunities in the U.S. Military Academies, ROTC and enlisted programs of the Armed Services. 
Parent Conferences On-going Yearly When the need arises, conferences may be scheduled with parents, students and teachers to resolve students’ social, behavioral or academic difficulties. 
PSAT / NMSQT  October Sophomore and Junior Years This test is offered in October to all juniors and sophomores. It is a practice for the SAT exam and a screening tool for the National Merit Scholarship Competition for juniors. 
PSAT Parent Workshops January Sophomore and Junior Years In January, after the PSAT scores are returned to students, parents will be invited to attend a workshop to assist them with the interpretation of their child’s score. 
Scholarship Bulletin On-going Yearly Local and national scholarship information can be found on the district website. Local scholarship applications can be downloaded from the internet. Periodically, information concerning scholarship opportunities will be sent home to parents. A special bulletin board located outside the Counseling Office also posts information concerning scholarship opportunities. 
Spring College Fair Spring Junior Year In the Spring of their junior year, students will be invited to sign up to attend the Western Suffolk Counselors’ College Fair. 
Student Referrals On-going Yearly Counselors will refer students to the Student Referral Committee or the Instructional Support Team for assistance as needed. 
Summer Program Opportunities Spring Yearly Information pertaining to opportunities for summer study is available in the Counseling Office. 
School to Career Orientation February Sophomore Year All tenth graders will attend a career orientation program presented by the Wilson Tech Vocational Center. 
Ground Hog / Job Shadow Day November - February Sophomore Year To promote career exploration, sophomores are invited to participate in a Job Shadowing Program. Meetings are held for three months prior to the program to prepare students to spend a day on the job at a career of their choice.  
How to Succeed in High School May Grade 8 Graduating seniors visit the Eighth Grade English classes for an interactive group discussion group. Topics covered include the importance of maintaining a strong schedule, getting involved in extra-curricular activities and challenging themselves in high school. 
From Homeroom to Dorm Room May Yearly Last year’s graduates return to BHS and join our seniors in a discussion of the real college life. Tips on preparing for the transition to independence as well as practical information pertaining to college life are shared with the students.
