Is it safe?

For your baby's comfort and safety, ensure you use non-toxic clay or ink, that washes off easily (it should be labelled as such).  Regular stamp ink pads or messy paints can stain your baby's delicate skin.   If you have any doubt, be sure to try it on your skin first.  Avoid oil-based paints as they are hard to wash off (you may require thinners)

What about the mess?

Ink imprints may be messier than clay imprints.  Baby oil and baby wipes (or mild soap and water) may be used to clean the (usually minimal) residue of clay (or ink) off the baby's hands or feet.

Some imprint kits do not require direct contact between the baby or mother with the ink, with the imprint kit having a small amount of ink on the underside so when the baby's foot or hand is pushed on the surface of the film, the inked side makes the handprint or footprint.
